DIY patchwork bags

DIY patchwork bagsPatchwork is one of the oldest decorative techniques. It is simple and complex at the same time. By putting together a canvas from many pieces, you can achieve geometric accuracy of neighboring elements. Or you can chaotically stitch together raw scraps and get a work of art, thanks to a filigree selection of color combinations of painting elements.

In those days, when production was not so developed and fabrics were expensive, any scrap of fabric was stored. The technique of making a patchwork bedspread was common in many countries. Products assembled from a large number of fragments decorated the house and warmed them on winter evenings.

Nowadays, famous fashion houses use fabrics made up of scraps of different colors and textures in their smart collections. The products look expensive and original. There is nothing difficult in decorating your clothes or home with products using this decorative technique.

Any needlewoman has at home a rather large bag with beautiful scraps and leftover fabrics; the larger it is, the better.A picture made up of different, but suitable in general color, patches is the most valuable thing in the patchwork technique. You can use your first experiments in new technology to sew a fashionable shopper bag.

Necessary material to make a patchwork bag

For the first experiment, it is better to choose a multi-colored thin cotton fabric with a plain weave. When composing a composition, you will need about five types of drawing. All fabrics must be in the same color scheme: warm or cold.

Important! Before opening, all materials need to be washed or steamed well, since cotton fabrics shrink, and we are going to wear the bag for a long time.

In addition to fabrics for decoration, you need to prepare:

  • cotton or mixed fabric for the lining, bottom and handles of the bag, it will also cover the wrong side of the decor;
  • sharp scissors for cutting parts. Advanced needlewomen use a circular knife with a special lined backing;
  • ruler and pencil, fine marker, tailor's chalk, tailor's pins;
  • well-set up sewing machine with straight stitches and decorative stitches.

Reference! A good option for a patchwork bag would be a collection of denim scraps. Old jeans and denim shirts will be used. The main thing is that the density of the parts being sewn is approximately the same.

Patterns with photos for patchwork bags

For the first experiment, it is better to use the simplest shape for sewing fragments - a square. If the side width of the workpiece is 7 cm, the width of the processed parts without seam allowance will be 5 cm.

How to make a bag using patchwork technique with your own hands

First you need to create a pattern for the product. On the panel of the bag we mark the part reserved for decoration. The length and width of the decor should be a multiple of the size of the stitched squares. That is, if the size of the square is 5X5 cm, then the decor can be 20X30 cm or 30X50 cm.

The most creative part of the work is composing a design from different scraps. Traditionally, the brightest part of the decor is located in the center, in the shape of an equilateral diamond. Fragments of paler color complement the picture on the sides. The design, which is achieved by combining different scraps, can be very different; the imagination of the master makes such products original and unique.

When the composition is composed, the fragments are numbered in rows. The squares are sewn in rows, then the stitched rows are connected to each other.

When sewing a bag, an overlocker is not required. The stitching on the machine should be well adjusted, the stitch frequency should be 3–4 mm. Since the product is designed to carry heavy loads, the seams must be strong. The threads used are synthetic or mixed, they will withstand heavy loads and will not fade in the sun.

Important! When sewing decorative elements, the seam width is always the same. The appearance of the decor depends on this. The slightest discrepancy between the joints cannot be corrected by subsequent stitching of the finished rows.

The sewn decorative fabric is ironed with steam. Now you can connect other parts of the bag. The bottom, handles of the bag and lining are processed and combined with decorative elements. All seam allowances are eventually covered with the lining.

The finished bag is ironed and the necessary fittings are sewn on.

Having mastered a simple form of decoration, you can make a more complex model. The sewn fragments can be used as a piece of fabric from which the details of the bag are cut out.You can combine different techniques in one product, for example, by quilting a patchwork piece with a decorative stitch lining. Gradually gaining more and more experience in making decor from fabric, the products will become more and more complex, and the result will be more interesting.
