Folk costume is a hallmark of Russian history. Each of them is filled with its own elements, bright motifs, and individual characteristics of a particular area. Moreover, even wedding dresses in different provinces were distinguished by colors, materials, and decorations. Today we’ll talk about the features of the wedding suit of the bride and groom in the Voronezh province.
Features of an ancient wedding costume in the Voronezh province
The large and chaotic population of the Voronezh province influenced the development of folk costume in the following way. Firstly, due to the diversity of visiting peoples - peasants from the Tambov, Oryol, and Moscow provinces - outfits arose in the districts, although they had common features, but were still quite independent. Secondly, in the 17th century. Many Ukrainians moved to the territory of Voronezh, who had their own unique influence on their new place of residence. It was also reflected in the folk costume.
Men's and women's clothing were made from natural materials that could be obtained either due to the fertile black earth soil or due to the widespread practice of cattle breeding here. Most often, fabrics were woven from wool, hemp and nettle.
Color was no less important. It reflected the aesthetic characteristics, hobbies and lifestyle of the peasant. The costume was dominated by 3 main colors:
- white;
- red.
Black is a symbol of the nurse-earth, the famous Voronezh black soil. For residents of the province, this color did not mean grief or mourning. On the contrary, black for them is a sign of peace and joy in the home, family, and household.
What does the bride's outfit look like?
A woman's wedding costume in the Voronezh region consists of a white or red long shirt embroidered with woolen patterns. Festive white clothes were bleached using ash. For everyday wear, it was not heavily bleached, but was decorated with a lot of patterns. The wedding shirt was also complemented with braid or fringe. One of the favorite options for brides was a shirt with red hems framed by beautiful ornaments.
On holidays it was also worn over kundya - a black jacket, cut like a vest. It was also generously embroidered, and the sleeves were decorated with lush ruffles and red piping.
One of the memorable elements of the costume was poneva - clothing made of woven wool, similar to a modern skirt. Usually sewn in black. Only thick threads were used, which were called skeins. The bottom of the ponyova was decorated with prozument - lets and braid made of multi-colored threads.
Groom suit
The men's suit in the Voronezh province is no longer distinguished by such a variety of elements. It still consisted of a shirt, but already belted. A belt is a necessary element of attire, in the absence of which a man was considered deprived of honor. The shirt was made from blue or red fabric, decorated with contrasting patterns. It was sewn according to the principle of a blouse - with an oblique slit at the collar. The length of the shirt was knee-length, so it partially covered the black trousers that all the men wore.
In addition to basic clothing, the peasant wore high boots and a headdress.
Details of the wedding look - headdress, shoes, etc.
Before marriage, all girls wore headscarves, while brides wore beautiful headdresses. They differed in different counties, but the most common were:
- shlychka - a red cap that tightly presses the hair. Worn over a bun;
- kokoshnik embroidered with beads.
Chuniks, wicker shoes, were worn as footwear. The sole was made of wood or genuine leather so that it would wear more slowly. Women wore knee socks, knitted with their own hands from colorful threads.
One of the most impressive elements of a woman's wedding dress is the presence of beaded chest jewelry.. Typically, multi-tiered necklaces were woven from small beads and secured to a thin strip of fabric tied at the back of the neck. It was believed that such amulets protected the bride from evil forces and the evil eye.
