Does angora fabric stretch or not?

There are various products made from angora on the market, as well as knitwear, which has the property of stretching. However, natural fabric does not stretch at allTo acquire these properties, various materials are added to the composition - for example, acrylic.

Sweater stretching

Things made from natural yarn have a short service life; to extend it, synthetic thread is added. However, over time this leads to loss of thermal insulation due to the fact that the wool thread is worn out.

To maintain durability without losing the properties of angora, wool is added - merino, alpaca, or sheep. Viscose and polyester are found in cheaper clothing. To avoid counterfeiting when purchasing, you need to study the composition of things and yarn.

Does angora stretch after washing?

It is not recommended to wash items made from angora, and items made from mohair are prohibited. After washing, items may stretch and lose their shape. If necessary, use dry cleaning. Many housewives still resort to washing, then special sensitivity must be observed:

  • delicate hand wash in warm water up to 30 °C;
  • using shampoo with glycerin or grated baby soap;
  • gently wring out the product using a terry towel;
  • dry on a horizontal surface at room temperature.

Reference! If the item still stretches after washing, some housewives use a trick: they place the item in the refrigerator for several hours. This often helps restore shape.

Like other items made from natural wool, angora must be protected from moths and other parasites. However, anti-moth preparations should be used with caution, as they can spoil the quality of the fabric.

Light jackets and sweaters are stored folded in the closet, as using a hanger will lead to stretching of the fabric. Angora coats are stored on hangers that are suitable in size; they must be strong enough to avoid deformation. Cotton fabric covers are used for storage.

Important! Clothing manufacturers recommend turning to professionals; natural mohair products must be protected even from rain.

Brief description of fabric properties

Angora is a type of wool fabric, divided into two types according to the manufacturing method:

First. The fluff of the Angora goat is used; its additional name is mohair. Goats are bred in Turkey; previously there were attempts at breeding in other countries, but due to climatic conditions, the animal did not take root. The fur of the Angora goat can reach a length of up to 30 cm.

Second. The fluff of the Angora rabbit is used for yarn; their wool can reach a length of 20 cm. The breed was bred through selection and has a wider distribution. Rabbit wool fabric is cheaper in price, but not as durable as mohair.

AngoraBoth varieties have high thermal insulation and softness, pleasant to wear. The natural color of the yarn is white, gray and black (rare), often has a shine. Making threads from Angora goat and rabbit fluff is a difficult task; they are slippery and smooth, and are highly electrified. The fibers have a low density, so the products are very light. The yarn can be dyed well in other colors, this helps to diversify the color palette. The items on sale are mainly items made from Angora rabbit fluff.

Some interesting facts:

  • mohair can cost 4,500 rubles. for one meter of fabric. It is often used by global brands to create their collections.
  • Angora is named after the city of Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
  • Until the mid-19th century, it was forbidden to export Angora goats from Turkey.
  • From an Angora rabbit you can “extract” up to 1.5 kg of fluff per year, with an average of 500 g.

What they sew and knit:

  • outerwear (coats, hats, mittens, scarves);
  • sweaters, cardigans, jackets;
  • skirts, warm dresses.

Well suited for children's clothes, due to its qualities of maintaining warmth and softness. Also, by adding merino wool, blankets and shawls are knitted. The products are quite light and very warm.

Important! Since the raw materials are quite expensive, you can often find fakes made from ordinary sheep wool on the market.
