Satin ribbons are a fairly effective and affordable way to decorate. They shimmer beautifully and are presented in bright colors, so they allow you to create festive items or make ceremonial decor. With their help you can create hairpins, headbands, and jewelry.
Relevance of satin ribbons
Using this element you can create hairpins, headbands, jewelry, and decorate gifts. If you use some simple techniques, the satin ribbons can be twisted in the form of a spiral. In this form they look even more original.
You can make flowers from curls; if the ribbon is narrow, you can even come up with hair for dolls.
These curls can be used to decorate gift packaging to make it more solemn.
Satin spirals will always look more advantageous in comparison with paper and synthetic decorative elements.
Step by step how to easily curl a satin ribbon into a spiral
There are several ways; the fastest and most practical ones will be discussed below.There are also more labor-intensive options, which are often used for preparing large batches of curls for future use. If you need it as quickly as possible and with a minimum of consumables, then the first method, using hair styling products, is suitable.
With wooden stick and varnish
You can use hairspray or hair foam; optimal fixation is achieved in both cases. Suitable for preparing a small number of spirals from satin ribbon 0.5-0.8 cm wide. You can also work with wider ribbons, but then you need more fixing agent and the result will not be as pronounced as in the case of narrow ribbons.
You will need:
- foam or hairspray;
- a wooden stick or pencil, depending on the desired diameter of the spirals;
- iron.
Important! You need to cut the satin ribbon approximately twice as long as the final result is planned. After all, curls will make the ribbon shorter in any case.
A piece of tape must be moistened with foam or hairspray, after which it must be wound onto a wooden stick.
Heat the iron (mode 2) and iron on all sides, turning the stick to fix it evenly. You need to iron until the fabric becomes dry. Carefully remove from the stick and the curl is ready.
It can be stretched, unwound, but it will return to its original twisted shape. The tape remains just as soft and elastic, which no other method provides.
Using a wooden stick and starch
You need to start by preparing a starch solution, which will act as a fixing agent.
Important! With this method, you need to calculate the time required to dry the coils naturally - in the sun or near a heat source.It is best to count on a day so that you don’t have to wait.
In order not to apply too much and unnecessarily weigh down the fabric, it is convenient to distribute the solution using a spray bottle; you will probably find your home empty of cosmetics. In a container you need to mix 1 tbsp. l solution with 470 ml of water, preferably warm. You need to stir until completely dissolved, then transfer the solution to a spray bottle.
Screw the required amount of tape onto a wooden stick of the required diameter; the width can be any.
Important! You should wind it as tightly or as loosely as the curls themselves need to be steep or voluminous. Also, the diameter of the stick will influence whether the spirals will be large or small.
At the beginning and end, the segment can be fixed either with tape or a clothespin. Spray starch solution along the entire length. There should be no dry islands, because the tape will not stick in that place. Now the wound piece must be left until completely dry, and then removed. The curls are dense and hard.
Application and useful tips
If you use the second method, you can treat the ribbons with the solution at the very end after decorating the gift. In this case, it is easy to see which part of the cut needs to be twisted. This is more convenient and practical, but again it takes time to dry.
To get the curl right, It is important to take into account the natural curl of the tape. It has a natural curl even without curling. The natural direction of the curl should be taken into account when twisting onto a stick.
Ready-made spirals made from grosgrain or satin ribbons are ideal for use in hair decorations. For example, gather curls of different colors into a bun, attaching them to an elastic band or hairpin.
