Sewing fur is a little different from sewing more common fabrics. Although the end result is worth the effort, knowing how to handle this material is essential. To cover or hang with fabric or other fabric, especially in graceful folds, decorate with drapery.
Before you begin sewing, you will need a large enough area to lay the fur to cut it off. You will also need very sharp tools, new ones if possible. The material must be thoroughly cleaned before it can be used in clothing or other projects.
Features of combining fur with drape
When joining materials, you need to make sure that the fur will lie in the correct direction. Lift it up and see where the hair naturally falls. For example, if you want to make a vest, the hairs will probably fall down, so you want to cut the pieces with that natural flow in mind. Spend some time combing the material and making sure there is no dirt on it.
On the back of the skin, mark the corresponding template for the item you want to make. Make these markings in ink dark enough that you can easily see them. If the material is dark, you may need chalk or something that will stand out.
How to combine fur with drape
Working with fur pelts requires some special tools and materials. To simply join their edges, you will need a sharp knife, a thimble, paper clips and a short needle with thin, strong thread. Before stitching, you must first align the edges of the skins. Draw straight lines towards both edges of the skin and cut along them with a very sharp knife.
Reference! Any fur products cannot be cut with scissors.
Now you need to secure the edges of the materials together with regular office clamps. When you sew a long seam by hand, these edges of the skin and fabric may move relative to each other. To avoid this, you need to draw marks on both edges, with a distance between marks of 5 - 10 cm
When sewing furs by hand, you must constantly check the fit. To sew by hand, use a short, thin needle. The sewing thread should be thin, durable to use.
Reference! Do not sew with double folded threads. Also, to connect the fur and the drape, you may need a thimble to protect your fingers.
Now it's time to sew everything together. It is recommended to sew in the direction from right to left. Do not tie knots at the end of the thread. Leave a small piece of thread and start making the first stitch.
Now you will learn the main rule of making fur stitch by hand. The hand sewing needle must go through the same hole twice.
Then you need to take a small step to the left of the first seam by 3-4 mm (stitch length). Now you need to prick both edges of the skin with a needle again and tighten it. Afterwards the needle should pierce the same hole again. The result is a reliable, hand-made seam.
