Story

The name of the fabric itself comes from the largest of the Channel Islands - Jersey - located in the English Channel between the French Republic and England. A unique breed of sheep grazed on beautiful emerald-colored fields, from whose wool they made knitted fabric for making light and warm underwear. In the 16th-17th centuries this was most relevant, because the island climate was cold and windy.

Already in the 18th century, tailors began producing tracksuits from jersey, but failed. Only ten years later, the famous French designer Coco Chanel turned her attention to this material. Having bought a batch of material in 1916, she presented her collection of outerwear at a Paris fashion show. A storm of indignation and indignation followed from the “cream of society” of that time.People were outraged because the designer did not use the fabric purposefully. But Coco did not give up, and already in her next collection she presented a straight dress to the attention of society. The opinion has changed. So Coco Chanel became the progenitor of this fabric in the fashion world, and for a century it has been at the peak of popularity.

Peculiarities

Now let's talk about what is now being added to this fabric. The fact is that the composition of the matter in question is often changed and something new is added. In recent years, silk, linen and cotton have been included in the composition of jersey, improving the properties of wool, but such qualities as softness, elasticity and drape have remained unchanged.

This fabric is so weightless that even if you sew a coat from it, it will be light in weight, but at the same time very warm.

The unique production technology allows jersey to not stretch like other fabrics - a combination of natural, synthetic or artificial threads allows you to obtain a material with all sorts of properties. Caring for items made from jersey directly depends on their composition, so you should read the tag on the product itself very carefully. Ideally, any wool clothing should be dry cleaned, but if this is not possible, it is enough to wash them in cool water and do not use a hot iron.

So, where is this fabric used, the production of which is widespread in all developed countries? In recent years, jersey has been made not only from natural materials, but also from cheaper synthetic fibers. Such budget options allow people with any income level to purchase products from it.

This fabric is considered the most popular among designers and clothing industries.Everything is sewn from it: from underwear to outerwear. But the most popular are things for children. The thing is that thanks to the color fastness, the fabric does not lose color and mothers really like it. Another plus is that this material does not deform. Elegant evening dresses, business suits and home items are also made from jersey.

If you look closely, I think that in the wardrobe of each of us there is an item of clothing made of jersey!
