The first “wearers” of denim would be surprised if they were told that such clothes would move from the category of work clothes to fashionable ones! But it is so! Every new fashion trend is necessarily embodied in jeans products. Such clothes are universal: they are worn at any time of the year, they go with all colors and are simply comfortable. Nowadays it is difficult to meet a person who does not have at least one denim item in his wardrobe. Why? Let's try to figure it out!
Denim and jeans are close relatives
It would seem that it makes no difference what the name of the fabric from which your favorite pants are made is called. But some people still argue that denim and jeans are not synonymous. This is wrong.
Reference. At the turn of the 13th-14th centuries, in the French city of Nimes, “serge from Nimes” fabric was made - serge de Nimes.
If you pronounce the name “in Russian”, you will get “de nim”. We call the material almost the same way today, but we write it in one word. Sails were then made from this fabric, it was so durable!
2 centuries passed, and Italian sailors from Genoa, who wore canvas trousers, called them “jeans”. This is an Americanized version of the name of their hometown.
Important! The words “denim” and “jeans” are synonyms or different names for the same fabric. It was this canvas that was destined to become one of America's greatest assets and conquer the whole world.
The originality of the fabric
When we say “jeans,” we first of all mean trousers. However, not only pants or shorts are made from such fabric. It is also used for skirts, jackets, bags, shoes and even home textiles.
Why has this material not lost its attractiveness? It's safe to say that one of its main advantages was its strength. Moreover, we are talking not only about the durability of the fibers, but also about the dyes used.
Kinds
All of the above became possible to produce after the original fabric manufacturing technology was modernized. First released diagonal twill, the same serge de Nimes.
Reference. It is this type of fabric that is called “denim” among professionals. It is the most expensive, rough, and becomes a little softer after washing.
There are also other types of denim.
- Broken twill. The threads are woven in a herringbone pattern, the fabric is stiff and difficult to fit. Therefore, it is used to sew loose-fitting products: jackets, jackets, straight trousers.
- Chambray. A light, summer variety, not only suitable for sewing skinnies and jeggings.
- Gin. Budget material, as high-quality cotton is mixed with cheaper ones. Therefore, the products do not last long.
- Stretch. The fabric with the addition of elastane or lycra stretches easily. Narrow things are sewn from it, emphasizing the curves of the body.
- Ramie or natural stretch. It consists of 45–55% cotton, the rest is Chinese nettle.
- Ecru. The name translates as “raw.” That is, this is denim in a natural, unbleached color. Depending on the source material, it has the color of linen or silk.
Color
The dyeing method combines all types of denim: only one thread is dyed, the main one. The cross thread remains light, so the wrong side always turns out lighter.
Many people are sure that denim should be blue. Really, the most common dye for this fabric to this day remains indigo. It was this dye that was the most persistent at the moment when L. Strauss began selling pants made of English canvas to gold miners.
But today you can find denim not only in classic blue, but also in almost any color.
Important! A special type of fabric is printed denim. It has not lost its relevance for several years and looks especially good in a summer wardrobe.
Care
Today people say different things about washing jeans. Some believe that frequent washing destroys the fibers of the fabric, in addition, the color “washes off” a little with each wash. Others are sure that this does not harm the material.
Important! Denim items should be washed with a non-bleaching detergent and in strict accordance with the instructions on the label. It is preferable to wash by hand; if there are persistent stains, pre-soak.
As for care, there is more a few rules.
- Washing should be done separately from other items to prevent staining.
- Dry flat, without pre-wringing.
- Ironing from the front side is acceptable, but only through the fabric. Otherwise, unnecessary gloss may appear.
Fashionable style
Denim is not only a material, but also a special style of clothing.More accurately, this style conveys the phrase “total jeans" Exactly the word "total" - the main characteristic of the style, which stands out from the well-known casual.
By choosing this fashion trend, denim fans are triumphant. You can wear all denim! Denim products are suitable for both work and leisure. And decorated with sequins or embroidery, they are quite appropriate at a holiday party.
Total jeans attracts with its affordability. You can find clothes to suit any budget and look just as stylish in inexpensive items as in those for which you have to pay much more. Expensive jeans products include clothes made in the USA. But things from Japan are even more expensive.
Reference. Japanese denim is pleasant to the touch. Its high cost is explained by technological difficulties. For weaving, ancient looms are used, that is, it is handmade.
It was once believed that a set should consist of items of the same color. Today this rule does not apply! You can wear clothes of different colors and shades at the same time.
Recently, it is not forbidden to combine blue trousers, a gray shirt with a print, and a mustard jacket. There is only one excuse - it’s very different, but still denim!
