How to starch tulle

Tulle skirtsStarched women's clothing looks feminine and dignified. Lush wedding and evening dresses made of tulle do not hold their shape well due to their complex cut. Starching is a reliable way to avoid such problems.

How to starch tulle at home

Tulle is starched using a soft method, which is also suitable for bedding, blouses and dresses.

What will you need for this?

For 1 liter of product we take 0.5-1 teaspoon of starch, which was diluted with cold water. Add to hot water, stir until a transparent paste with a homogeneous composition appears. If the mass has acquired a cloudy hue, boil it for 2-3 minutes over low heat. Add a little water, stir and cool.

Important! To ensure even distribution, stir it several times. The maximum effect of the procedure will be more pronounced if you dip the tulle into a solution at room temperature.

Starch

  1. Immerse the tulle fabric in the resulting product for 15 minutes.
  2. At the end of the procedure, lightly wring out the fabric, straighten it and let it dry.
  3. Before you start ironing the product, you should slightly moisten it and wait until the fabric softens. The iron temperature when ironing should not be too high.

How to starch a tulle skirt and dress

Starching tulle items is done quite quickly. The main thing is to maintain the ratio of components.

What will you need for this?

Starch, water, a small container and a spatula for stirring. Starch can be potato, corn or rice.

Important! Before carrying out the procedure, you should determine in advance the stiffness of the skirt. For example, to easily “strengthen” a petticoat you will need only 5 g. starch + 1 liter of water. However, if it is the basis of all heavy skirts, the resulting product should be more concentrated.

Preparation of paste

  1. Starch tulleAdd 1 tablespoon of starch to a glass of cold water (200 ml), stirring it thoroughly.
  2. Next, pour the starch into boiling water (0.5 l), keep it on low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly until the mixture becomes transparent.
  3. Using gauze, strain the liquid to sift out any lumps. The consistency of the solution should be similar to jelly.

Fabric preparation

  • A tulle skirt/dress should be washed well, as the homemade starch product has very adhesive properties. This means that all dust and specks will stick to the material immediately after the procedure.
  • Rinse the product especially thoroughly. Otherwise, remaining traces of powder can lead to unsightly streaks when starching.
  • After finishing washing, you should inspect the fabric for cleanliness.

Starching process

Starching the skirt

  1. The skirt/dress should be laid out on oilcloth, straightening the material as much as possible.
  2. Using a sponge, apply the prepared solution in the following order: from the lower petticoat towards the upper one. This must be done carefully, slowly: there is a risk of uneven application of the starch product. The result is an uneven appearance of the product. Before moving on to the next layer, the previous one needs to be dried a little.
  3. Drying - only in a vertical position or on oilcloth.
  4. You should iron the material when it is slightly damp, then it will be easy to give the desired shape.

Tulle skirtFaster way. Dip the petticoats into a container with the solution, holding the upper layers. Then squeeze carefully. Dry the product vertically (can be hung on a hanger).

Important! A tulle skirt in several layers is not completely processed: excessive pomp will not bring the desired attractiveness. Only the lower layers are starched, and the upper ones are kept in place in order to avoid unwanted contact with the solution.

Secrets

  • Starched material wrinkles very much. A steamer or iron with this function will help solve this problem.
  • Moisture will destroy the starch layer. Therefore, you should avoid walking in the rain wearing such clothes. For the same reason, you can’t hang it out in the cold.
  • Adding a pinch of salt to the solution will add extra shine.
  • The fabric will not stick to the soleplate of the iron when ironing if you add 3-4 drops of turpentine to the paste.
