How to Clean a Felt Hat

Felt hatJust a few years ago, a headdress in the form of a hat was considered a wardrobe detail in a “retro” style. But, thanks to Dominico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana and Victoria Beckham, a practical and bright element has once again become a must-have attribute of women's and men's wardrobes.

Most often, hats are made from felt - thin soft felt that changes shape well and can be cleaned.

Ways to clean a felt hat at home

From photographs of fashion magazines, the pages of online publications and television screens, fashionistas smile at models in spectacular, fashionable and, most importantly, clean felt hats.

In everyday life, dust, precipitation and other contaminants interfere with maintaining the impeccable appearance of your headdress. But this ceases to be a problem in the hands of an experienced housewife.

You can clean the cap using the traditional manual method or the modern method. using an iron or a home steam generator.

Steam cleaning

Steam cleaningIf the reason for updating the headdress is the stale appearance of the canvas, covered with dust, then you can use steam. The procedure is carried out in three ways:

  • Boiling water in a container and holding the product above the rising steam;
  • Using an iron with steam;
  • The use of a professional steam generator or its common analogue - an iron with a steam generator function or the possibility of vertical steaming.

In addition to steam, to remove dirt you will need a soft brush, which you need to run over the fabric after steaming. Just a few movements - you don’t need to rub the cap too hard, dust and small fluff should be neutralized by the steam.

Manual method

Before cleaning, the hat must be placed on a mannequin or other container (for example, a saucepan, a three-liter jar, a wide vase turned upside down). Before starting the procedure, it is better to vacuum the fabric.

Hand washing the accessory is also possible if you do it carefully in the following sequence:

  • Fill a deep bowl with cold water.
  • Dip the hat in water and wait until it is completely wet, then wring it out.
  • Repeat the manipulations several times, then squeeze the part as much as possible and dry it in the same jar, vase or pan.

Important. Do not use bleach or liquids containing chlorine during washing. It is better to generally reduce the use of synthetic cleaners to a minimum, giving preference to the mechanical method.

Types of stains on a hat and how to clean them

The cleaning procedure becomes more difficult if there are stains on the accessory. But, thanks to recipes proven over the years, you can get rid of barely noticeable droplets of rain or snow, greasy stains and even sweat.For these purposes, improvised means and professional cleaners are used.

Important! Felt hats are cleaned in the direction of the pile. This maintains the durable texture of the fabric and prevents deformation of the product.

Raindrops

Since a hat is clothing for the head, it often becomes a shelter from rain and snow. While the product is wet, the drops are invisible, but after drying they turn into white marks. You can get rid of them in several ways:

  • Immediately after getting wet, the product should be filled with crumpled newspapers and dried away from heating radiators (best on a ventilated balcony);
  • If stains remain after drying, then you need to steam the product over boiling water or use an iron (steam generator);
  • Another method is to clean the accessory with a medium-hard brush, wetting it with cool water.

Washing as a method of cleaning a felt hat from raindrops can only be used if there are traces of dirt on it.

Oily stains

Small and serious stains of grease, chocolate, and sweat can be cleaned with pharmaceutical and detergent products. The most common option is to wipe the product with a solution of water and ammonia (in equal proportions). Grease stains on the cap will disappear if you clean them with a brush soaked in gasoline or diesel fuel and then wash them. A mixture of gasoline and starch also removes greasy marks well. The mixture is applied to the stain, left until completely dry, then the residue is removed with a dry brush.

Important! Only dry felt hats can be wiped with flammable liquids; wet ones are deformed under the influence of petroleum products.

Cleaning hats of different colors

To clean hats of different colors, you can use other methods that are more original and no less effective.For example, light felt hats can be updated with dry crust of white bread, bran or talcum powder. Dark products will be given freshness by cleaning with dry, clean sawdust from the wood of deciduous trees (birch, oak, maple).

Proper storage is the key to a clean felt hat

In order for a product to still seem like it was recently purchased 10 years later, it must be stored correctly. Felt hats retain color, shape and freshness if they are kept in separate cardboard boxes and aired every 3-4 months. The best place for storage is the bottom shelf of a closet, chest of drawers or the top shelf of a dressing room.
