Gabardine

Gabardine - This is a dense fabric, characterized by a peculiar diagonal weaving of threads.

Description

Fabrics GabardineIt is not difficult to recognize gabardine among other fabrics. To do this, you need to carefully examine the front and back sides of the fabric. On the front side it is embossed, on the surface there is a noticeable scar that crosses the entire canvas at an angle, and the back side is smooth.

History of creation

The fabric that is popular these days is quite old, and its name is even older than the material.

The creator of gabardine was the English trader Thomas Burberry. At the end of the 19th century. he owned a small shop where he sold various clothes. The goods included items for sports and active recreation. The store owner managed to create a new fabric that was needed on the foggy island to protect against rain and wind.

Local farmers used durable cloaks made of coarse flax for this purpose. Burberry was able to make the same functional fabric using fibers other than flax. It was not blown by the wind and did not get wet, and the quality of the material was higher. And it was decided to call the new material the same way that strong capes were called back in the Middle Ages - gabardine.

Production

Gabardine in different colorsA special feature of the fabric was the arrangement of the threads. Instead of the traditional weave of fibers in horizontal and vertical positions, for gabardine fabric the weft and warp threads were placed diagonally. There are different angles of inclination of the fibers: minimum – 45°, maximum – 70°.

For relief, threads of different thicknesses are used: the weft is 2 times thicker than the warp. In this case, for the weft, the thread is twisted in half, and the warp is inserted into the weave without twisting.

This feature of weaving allowed the material to become practically waterproof. Wet particles roll down inclined grooves without entering the fiber structure.

Composition and types of gabardine

There are many different types of gabardine available these days. They differ in composition and qualities.

What is gabardine made of?

Initially, gabardine fabric was completely natural. Wool fibers, mainly merino, were used for its production. Later they began to make fabric from flax.

With the advent of synthetic threads, the composition of the material began to change. Today, manufacturers offer fabrics that combine natural fibers and synthetics.

Reference! Synthetics affect the appearance of the material, adding shine to it. A matte surface without shine indicates that the fabric contains no synthetics at all, it is completely natural.

Different percentages of threads give different qualities to fabrics. The front side of the canvases also has some differences; they are associated with the clarity of the hem.

Types of gabardine

Fabric GabardineMade from wool. Woolen fabric is woven from pure wool yarn. The characteristic gabardine scar on the front side of this material is clearly visible.

Made from polyester. The material, made of synthetic fibers, is distinguished by its smoothness. The technology of weaving threads during its production remains unchanged; there is an inclined scar on the surface, but it is practically indistinguishable. To see it, you have to look closely.

Mixed. Wool, silk, and cotton threads are used as additives to synthetics.

All types of gabardine accept modern dyes well. Manufacturers take advantage of this by offering fabrics in a variety of shades.

Reference! For the popular melange fabric, threads of two colors are intertwined. In this case, the weft and warp have different colors.
