Spandex is known to many people. This is a polyurethane fiber that was invented by the geniuses of the textile industry in the USA. It is added to fabric for better stretchability. Most often, it is used to make sportswear, swimsuits, shapewear, socks and tights.
When the time comes to wash an item that contains this material, many thrifty housewives wonder how best to do it. Hot temperatures negatively affect spandex: the fabric can overstretch and lose its shape.. To prevent this from happening, experts recommend carefully choosing washing modes and washing products.
In the washing machine or by hand?
Spandex is a capricious material. It should not be washed at temperatures above 40 degrees, wring out too much or excessively rub stains that are ingrained into the fabric. Certainly for him Hand washing is preferable, but a delicate cycle in a machine is also possible.
If the contamination is strong, it is allowed soak. To do this, the item must be placed in a basin with cool water and cleaning agent.Leave it like this for 25 minutes and then wash it. Twisting must be avoided during spinning.
Important! Shiny spandex needs to be washed especially carefully. However, as well as wearing clothes made from it. The fact is that after each wash, the shine becomes less and less, especially if the recommended water temperature is not observed.
Mode and delicate nuances
As noted above, only the delicate (or manual) cycle can be used for washing. Do not place colored items with plain ones, or light ones with dark ones, in the machine.. Manufacturers do not always dye spandex with high quality. Therefore, clothes often fade from it.
Before washing it is necessary fasten all zippers and buttons, check pockets for small and sharp objects (keys, pins). There is no need to turn on the extra spin mode. It is better if the remaining water drains naturally after rinsing.
Important! If you need to bleach an item, you should do it as delicately as possible. It is better to choose a product without chlorine and not to soak the product in a solution with it for a long time.
You can dry this material on a rope, first turning the item inside out. Experts do not recommend hanging a spandex product where direct sunlight will fall on it (the fabric may fade). Immediately after drying, it must be removed from the rope (this is done so that the thing does not stretch).
By the way! It is better to dry outerwear on hangers. This way it will definitely not lose its shape.
What cleaning agents should I use?
Both various gels and powders are suitable. It is important that the packaging bears the inscription “for polysatin”. There are no phosphates in such products and virtually no surfactants.
For example, these work great:
- Persil Gel.It washes the most difficult stains as gently as possible, without damaging the delicate fibers of the fabric. Does not leave streaks, washes off easily from clothes and does not cause allergic reactions.
- Wellery Gel. Takes care of the material during washing. Smoothes a little, gives softness and copes well with difficult stains. Absolutely safe for both fabric and human health.
- Synergetic. The product foams well and is easily washed out of fabric fibers. Hypoallergenic, pleasant, but unobtrusive smell.
- Gloss. Gives softness and shine to any synthetic fabrics, including those containing spandex. Suitable for dark clothes, as it works to preserve color during washing.
Adviсe
How long this or that item will last depends, first of all, on proper care for it. Experienced housewives recommend:
- do not use conditioners for washing spandex (many of them have a rather aggressive composition that spoils the delicate fibers);
- check the item for small holes and snags (if this is not done, then during spinning the fabric in the damaged area can literally “creep”);
- iron only at low temperatures (no more than 150 degrees), and it is better to completely abandon this procedure (especially if there is a lot of synthetics in the fabric, and it practically does not wrinkle).
The “finickiness” of spandex is not a reason to refuse clothes made from it. It is important to “make friends” with him and learn proper care. In this case, you will definitely be able to experience all the advantages of something made from this fabric.
