Nylon is the material that once again proves that the chemical industry is capable of much. Incredibly practical and wear-resistant, today it is used in sewing a wide variety of products. Clothing made from fabric containing nylon does not wrinkle, holds its shape and color well, does not absorb moisture, and in most cases is safe for allergy sufferers.
In 1935, US chemist Wallace Hume Carothers, who worked for DuPont, created a new polymer, which was later called nylon. This material did not go on sale immediately, but three years after the release of the “premiere” batch.
Interestingly, the talented chemist did not set a goal to create a unique material. He studied new areas of science for the benefit of the company. It was assumed that new substances that could be obtained during the experiments would bring additional money. Who would have thought then that Carezors’ research would not only increase the company’s turnover, but also give humanity material without which it is impossible to imagine modern life!
When nylon went into mass production, the scientist continued to work on improving it.From then to this day, this synthetic material has been used to make stockings and socks, toothbrush bristles and even parachute canopies.
By the way! The US flag that Neil Armstrong placed on the surface of the moon is also made of nylon.
The raw materials for production are acetic acids and amides. They are polymerized, resulting in a polymer. It is then stretched to form thin but strong fibers, which are then twisted into threads. In its pure form, nylon fabric has no stretch at all. To achieve this, elastane is added to its composition.
It is believed that nylon is practically harmless. This is true, but only partly. For example, outerwear (jackets, down jackets) made from it are ideal, as they protect from rain and wind better than many other materials. However, it is not recommended to wear things made from it in the summer: nylon does not allow air to pass through, and therefore the risk of getting a heatstroke in such a dress on a hot afternoon is prohibitively high, and the sensation of “synthetics” sticking to the body cannot be called pleasant.
Externally, nylon is a smooth, pleasant to the touch and light in weight material. An uninformed person may confuse it with silk, but unlike this natural fabric, the price of nylon is not high, and therefore products made from it are sold in so-called mass markets.
Clothes made of nylon will not stretch or shrink even after long use. In addition, nylon fabric is very difficult to tear (which cannot be said, for example, about cotton), and you can wash it without really thinking about choosing a mode. It is enough to set the temperature at 30 degrees and do not use chlorine-containing cleaning products.
Nylon is used for industrial and domestic purposes. So, mixed with fiberglass, it is ideal for the production of film, various bushings and even guitar strings.
Household applications of nylon include its use in the manufacture of camping equipment, workwear, jackets, backpacks, hosiery and T-shirts, household items and car seat covers.
There are few varieties of this material. Among the main ones:
