How to wash a polyester coat

When worn, any item tends to get dirty. Outerwear, which absorbs the main environmental influences: snow, rain, wind, dust, is more susceptible to contamination. Mechanical friction causes the sleeves and pocket edging to become dirty. One way to remove stains is to have the item dry cleaned, but due to its cost and time, this may not be suitable for everyone.

Polyester coat

One type of fabric that can be washed in a regular machine is polyester. This material is widely used for sewing jackets, coats, and raincoats. Our article contains instructions on how to wash such polyester items in an automatic washing machine.

Preparation

  1. We check the resistance of the fabric to detergent. When purchasing clothes, along with spare accessories, the manufacturer puts in a small piece of fabric from which the product is made. It is necessary for testing the product that will be used for washing.Apply a little and watch the reaction: if there are no changes in structure and coloring, then this type of powder can be used when washing coats;
  2. Remove all detachable decorative parts: belt, fur inserts, metal badges, cuffs;
  3. Check your pockets. Keys, lighters, coins, paper clips, pens, buttons and any other objects can damage not only the washing machine, but also the coat itself;
  4. Fasten all buttons and zippers and turn the outfit inside out;
  5. Place in a washing bag.

Tip: pay attention to the information on the label. The usual cleaning temperature for polyester clothing is 40º, but sometimes the manufacturer reduces it to 30º, or increases it to 60º.

What laundry detergents should I use?

When choosing, you need to focus on the color scheme of the coat. If the outfit is dark in color, then it is better to give preference to liquid washing powder. Thus, outerwear will last longer and retain its original appearance.

If the coat is brightly colored or light, you can use not only liquid laundry detergent, but also granular powder. Under no circumstances should you use a variety of bleaches. Otherwise, the item will become unusable and lose its presentation. Below we will look at the basic recommendations on how to wash a polyester coat at home.

Removing stains

It happens that it is not always possible to achieve a flawless appearance of a product by resorting only to washing. And the culprit is stains that ordinary powder cannot cope with.Even though polyester is very resistant to various types of stains, you will have to work hard to remove stains from wine, coffee, chocolate or grease.

It is important to know: any such areas are removed from the edges to the middle. This method will avoid further spread of contamination.

Before you start washing, the problem areas of the product should be treated with a stain remover and left for a while. If he has failed to cope with the pollution, then it makes sense to resort to more radical measures. Depending on the nature of the stain, there are several proven and effective ways to combat it.

Wine stains can be removed with salt. To do this, add a little warm water to it, mix until it becomes a paste and apply to the problem area for 15–20 minutes.

Oily stains can be easily removed by using talcum powder and a brush. But it should be remembered that with this cleaning method you need to avoid water and apply talc to a dry cloth, rubbing it thoroughly with a brush.

Ammonia, diluted in a 2 to 1 ratio with glycerin, will be a wonderful ally in the fight for cleanliness. This method is suitable if there are stains from coffee, tea and chocolate on things.

Advice: it’s easiest to get rid of fresh dirt, so don’t delay cleaning. Stubborn stains will be much more difficult to remove.

Handwash

WashOne way to quickly deal with contamination is to pre-soak and wash individual areas. Let's learn how to wash a polyester coat using these processes.

Partial washing of sleeves, cuffs and hem can reduce washing time. In this case, certain rules must be observed:

  • it is forbidden to stretch the fabric;
  • Strong mechanical impact using brushes is not allowed. It is better to take a piece of soft cloth and, after moistening it in a soapy solution, gently wipe the dirty places.

Excessive creasing of polyester fabric will lead to loss of shape and attractive appearance of the product.

The soaking procedure can be done manually or entrusted to a machine by selecting the appropriate mode. For the first option you will need:

  • bath thermometer;
  • capacity;
  • warm water;
  • detergents.

Important! At washing polyester products Do not use chlorine bleach! An alternative to them is liquid oxygen.

  1. We adjust the temperature, the water should not exceed 35 degrees, use a thermometer for this;
  2. Add detergent to the container, preferably liquid powder, and then mix thoroughly. This is done in order to avoid the presence of white streaks on the fabric, which may appear after the item has completely dried. If there are traces of animal hair or fluff on the coat, it is recommended to remove this kind of contamination with a soft bristle brush or a roller for cleaning clothes.
  3. Before placing your coat in water, turn it inside out. If the item is heavily soiled, then the best option would be to soak the item in water for 30-40 minutes. But you should not abuse this method and leave the coat to get wet for a long time if the item is not one color.
  4. During the washing process, it is recommended to use a clothes brush to remove dirt. It is desirable that it has soft pile. There is no need to press too hard on the brush, so the risk of damaging the fabric will be minimized.
  5. After the coat is cleaned of dirt, it should be rinsed in cool water several times.It is recommended to add a small amount of fabric conditioner there. You need to wring out the item very carefully and carefully so as not to damage the structure of the fabric, thus preventing premature deformation of the coat. Hang the outfit on a hanger and let it drain, then move it to a warm room until completely dry.

Advice: carefully read the instructions for using powders, stain removers and conditioners - not all of them are suitable for washing such material. The best option for polyester is liquid powder for delicate fabrics.

Machine cleaning

Important! Before loading the drum, make sure there is no other dirty laundry in it.

Machine washableTo determine whether a polyester coat can be washed in a washing machine, you need to look at the product label.

The basin shown is crossed out - cannot be washed, outerwear is suitable for dry cleaning only. There is no icon - washing is allowed.

Before you decide to wash polyester, you can test its strength. To do this, gauze or a cotton pad must be moistened and applied to the material. If the surface is stained or the coat has changed color, it should absolutely not be washed.

When it is not colored, carefully place the folded coat in the machine. Select the wash type “delicate” or “synthetic”. In accordance with the recommendations on the label, we set the water temperature: too hot will damage the integrity of the fibers (30 degrees mode).

  1. It is necessary to turn off the spin cycle - it is strictly forbidden to twist polyester coats, this leads to deformation of the fabric and loss of the coat's presentation;
  2. We use only washing products that are suitable for polyester. They cannot be added to the drum or to a special cuvette.Direct contact with chemical active substances also harms tissue;
  3. It is recommended to set the washing program to a double rinse mode - this way, the water will remove powder particles stuck between the fibers. After drying, there will be no stains or streaks on the front side.

When the washing process comes to an end, you need to carefully remove the coat from the bag, shake it and hang it on hangers to dry. Do not wring out the fabric.

If the machine you are using is semi-automatic, then you will have to set the water temperature manually, using a thermometer.

When independently caring for things made from synthetic fabrics, you need to decide on some issues. First, you should carefully inspect the product for contamination. Evaluate the scope of work, depending on the appearance. If the coat is 100% polyester, some features may be omitted. When the composition includes other natural ingredients, more careful cleaning will be required.

Secondly, you should pay attention to the manufacturer’s recommendations. They include the temperature standard, type of washing and drying. Taking note of such information will extend the life of the product.

Air conditioning is necessary to remove static electricity. Since the minimum spin speed will not allow you to achieve the desired effect the first time, you can use it again. After removing the coat, hang it on a spacer to maintain its shape.

The item does not require additional ironing, but to give it the appropriate look, you can use a hand steamer. If there is no such mode on the iron, ironing should only be done through damp gauze.

Washing coats made of fabric of mixed structure is done extremely rarely in cases of special need.Natural materials lose their textured lines when washed frequently. In fact, there is no difference in care between mixed and 100% synthetic fabrics; it is enough to follow the previously presented recommendations.

It happens that the coat gets dirty in a specific place. Of course, it’s not worth washing it completely. There is an algorithm of actions that must be followed to quickly remove the stain:

  1. Choose a soft stain remover;
  2. Apply it to the stained area and leave for two minutes;
  3. Gently rub the stain and lightly wash. The main thing is to remove the stain remover.

An alternative to detergent is table salt.

Attention! If a polyester coat is additionally insulated with down or padding polyester, care must be taken to ensure that the material does not turn into lumps. You can purchase special fluff-smoothing balls at any hardware store.

If the coat contains both polyester and wool, the algorithm of actions remains the same. The only caveat is that the detergent should be chosen for wool, not polyester.

It is possible to wash an outfit made from this material in a washing machine. However, this process requires special care: with a careless attitude there is a chance of ruining the coat irrevocably.

In what cases is it better to trust professionals?

There are situations when home appliances are unreliable and you should take help from specialists or contact a dry cleaner.

  • according to the manufacturer's recommendations;
  • white color of the product;
  • the presence of difficult to remove stains from fuel oil or oil;
  • there is no possibility for independent removal;
  • there is no desire to spoil products if you are unsure of your own methods.

Taking good care of your coat, timely cleaning and washing will help extend the life of your favorite item.
