How to smooth out silk from wrinkles and creases at home

Using an iron

Natural silk

  • Ironing silkWe set the mode with the same name. After this, we try the heated sole of the iron on an inconspicuous area of the item, so as not to accidentally spoil it. If the fabric is ironed and not damaged, then you can safely proceed;
  • iron the silk item from the wrong side. If it has a complex cut, then before ironing, put gauze or thin material on the front side so as not to damage the surface, and the iron will not leave water stains;
  • Do not iron wet silk, so as not to spoil the fibers. Do not turn on the steam mode.So, silk will quickly become unusable and after such ironing it will become stiff;
  • If the item is dry, then a few hours before ironing, apply gauze or a towel soaked in water.

Advice: If the fabric is stretched (the same is done if creases form), then it is moistened in a glycerin solution and dried. Prepare the mixture as follows: 1 tbsp. spoon of the substance per 5 liters of water. Then iron it again. When scorch marks appear from the iron, they are lubricated with a mixture of soda and water, then the dried mixture is cleaned with a soft bristle brush.

Using a hot bath or steam shower

Things with a complex cut can be ironed like this:

  • hang the item on a hanger;
  • hang it in the bathroom on a clothesline;
  • open the hot water tap. Do not allow splashes to fall on the fabric;
  • we close the door to the room so that it fills with steam as quickly as possible;
  • After a few minutes, the steam itself will gradually straighten out the folds in the fabric.

Using a hot kettle

Steam over the kettle

  • we take the thing and carry it to the kitchen;
  • pre-boil the kettle;
  • keep places that are not ironed over hot steam;
  • the most stubborn folds should straighten out.

Important: Do not damage the fabric with hot steam. These manipulations must be repeated literally for a few seconds.

The best way is a steam generator

for steamingThe steam generator has the mildest effect on silk. We pour water into the reservoir, turn on the device, set the “Silk” mode and begin ironing.

This ironing method will be the most delicate. It does not damage the fabric and is much gentler on it than an iron.

Other options

You can use vertical steam for ironing. To do this, hang the item on a hanger, set the iron to steam mode and run it without touching its surface, placing the device at a distance of 6–7 centimeters from the surface of the fabric.

How to prevent wrinkles and creases in silk

Wash

It is recommended to wash such items by hand. To do this, water at a temperature of no more than 30 degrees is poured into the basin. It is best to use liquid detergents; they are thoroughly diluted in water until completely dissolved. In concentrated form, the fabric can be damaged. If things are bright, and you decide to use laundry detergent, then you should buy a pack marked “Color”. If desired, you can use baby soap or baby laundry powder.

Silk scarfTo avoid damage to the material, silk cannot be bleached, because silk threads are a protein that chlorine destroys during its aggressive effects. After bleaching, the item breaks easily.

In addition, silk items should not be soaked. If the contamination is very strong, then soaking should last no longer than 10 minutes. Do not rub the fabric too hard to prevent damage.

Whip the water in a basin until it becomes soapy and immerse, trying to scrub as gently as possible. If you decide to wash it in an automatic machine, you should choose the delicate wash mode. It involves washing at 30 degrees, rinsing and light spinning. Items should not be washed more often than once every 14 days; it is recommended to ventilate them in the fresh air.

Spin

It is not recommended to twist silk using hands or a centrifuge. You need to put the item down and lightly press it with your palms so that the water drains out. The main thing is not to overdo it.

After this, the item is straightened out and laid out on a towel. It will absorb excess water, and then hang it on a hanger.Otherwise, if you hang it on a rope, the thing will simply stretch out.

Ironing

Try not to use the steam mode. The iron is set to the “silk” mode. If it is not there, then you can switch to the “Wool” mode. The product is turned inside out; you cannot use steam or keep the iron in one place for a long time. Before ironing, you should definitely try ironing an inconspicuous place to check whether the sole is sticking or damaging the fabric. It is best to use a steam generator.

Removing stains and helpful tips

This procedure should be carried out in a dry cleaner, but simple stains can be easily dealt with at home. Traces of sweat are removed with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. Yellow stains on white fabric can be removed by rinsing with water and adding a small amount of vinegar. It is recommended to replace it by rinsing with ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. Thus, silk will retain its whiteness longer.

You can remove stains using aspirin, ground into a paste. It is useful to ventilate things in the open air from time to time, without exposing them to sunlight. This way things will retain their attractive appearance and shine longer.

Silk is a delicate fabric that requires special care. Experts recommend not washing silk with aggressive detergents. Silk fabric should be ironed using an iron at low temperature or hot steam. Do not bleach to prevent the material from starting to tear; do not soak it. If these conditions are met, a silk blouse, skirt or shirt will last a very long time and retain its attractive appearance.
