What is the glossy wool fabric called?

Lustrine fabricToday the world knows many fabrics. Satin, velvet, knitwear, silk - all this is just a small part of the materials familiar to us.

In this article we will touch on an equally mysterious, interesting fabric called lustrine, and learn the history of its origin and production.

The history of lustrine

In Rus', this material became known back in the distant 18th century. Back then, this durable and slightly stiff fabric was made from wool of coarser varieties than, for example, merino and cashmere.

Based on the literature of previous centuries, one can roughly understand how popular this material was. It was used almost everywhere: for the production of clothing, curtains, furniture. This material was preferred, as a rule, by representatives of the lower classes: hairdressers, clerks and others.

Three stages of making a lustrine

Before talking about the production of lustrin, it is worth noting that its characteristics in many countries could differ from the original version. For example, in Russia and Germany, natural cotton threads were added when making this fabric, which gave it a more beautiful and glossy surface.

  • Yarn production. At the first stage, the wool is degreased, scuffed and oiled.
  • Manufacturing of harsh materials. The second stage was spinning the yarn; it was made as thin as possible to make the fabric smoother and more pleasant to the touch.
  • Finishing. The yarn is then checked for gaps and knots that may have formed during the spinning of the yarn. Now foreign impurities are plucked out, and the material is ready for use.
