Wool flowers, wet felting

In ancient times It was enough for a person to rest his gaze on the flowering meadows and fields. But the idea came to him to create something man-made and equally amazing. Thus floristry was born. This was not enough for the creative nature. The idea arose to convey my vision of the plant world using wool felting.

How to felt a flower from wool using the wet felting technique?

ylang-ylang

IN "wool floristry" flowers are one of the main elements. And it is no coincidence that a flower was chosen for the master class ylang-ylang. It differs from other plants not only in its rich smell, but also in its intricately elongated curling petals.

Materials and tools

felting tools

  • Wool. Choose three colors: light green, bright yellow and orange-brown.

Ylang-ylang buds at the beginning of flowering do not differ from the surrounding light green foliage. At the moment of full opening, the shade of the petals changes to bright yellow, and before they fall they become orange-brown.

  • Air bubble film. It is on this surface that wool fibers fall best.
  • Soap solution. Add a small amount of liquid soap to hot water.
  • A spray bottle or small sprayer for flowers. For applying the solution to the workpiece.

Do not use a plastic bottle with holes in the cork for this purpose. This method does not produce a fine droplet spray. The workpiece may move under the water jets.

  • Mosquito net.
  • Shape in the form of a truncated cone. Necessary for the formation of a bud after washing the product. You can use a small plastic or glass bottle or the handle of a rolling pin.
  • Low-fat milk (twenty milliliters). To give rigidity to the petals.
  • Towel.

Master Class

Place bubble wrap on a moisture-resistant surface.

Display

We lay out a flat flower with sharp petals from bright yellow wool.

Each ylang-ylang bud is up to eight centimeters long. Prepare strands of wool twice as long. When the wool fibers shrink after felting, we get petals of natural size.

Sequencing:

  1. Pull fibers from the bright yellow combed ribbon and arrange them in the shape of a snowflake. The flower has six petals, so your “snowflake” should have six rays of the same density and thickness.
  2. Place the ends of the strands that you hold with your hand when tearing off the fur (they are thicker and denser) in the middle of the flower.
  3. “Drawing” highlights. Pull out thin bundles of fibers from the orange-brown combed ribbon. Carefully place a top layer on each petal.

Moisten the workpiece with soapy water and cover with a mosquito net. Rub the petals in with your hands. Do this carefully, the layout should not move.

Periodically shoot mesh so that it does not stick to the wool. Use your fingers to form smooth edges of the petals. Lengthen the ends by twisting them into curls.

Go ahead for a long time, sometimes turn the workpiece from one side to the other.

After the petals are ready, set aside to the side of the workpiece. Let's start felting the core and stem.

Central detail - the core and leg are one

Separate The strand from the combed tape is light green. Its length should be twice as long as expected for the finished product.

Moisten two thirds of the tourniquet in a soap solution. Roll it into a sausage shape (flower stem) with your hands.

Dry part of the tourniquet take it apart into separate strands and arrange them in the form of a fan (core). Moisten with soapy water, cover with a mosquito net and apply with your hands. After some time, you need to remove the mesh and manually add the petals.

Wash and dry

We wash the preparations in running water and give them the shape of an ylang-ylang flower. This can be done by putting them on any object in the shape of a truncated cone with smooth curves. Smooth and straighten both parts one by one. Curl the long ends of the petals.

We collect

Assembling the flower is easy, since you don’t need to sew anything on or attach it with a felting needle.

  1. Make a small hole in the middle of the workpiece with bright yellow petals.
  2. Take the centerpiece and tie a knot in the stem just below its light green petals. Thread it into the flower bowl. The core is ready.
  3. To secure the entire structure, it is enough to tie another knot on the leg, but under the bowl of bright yellow petals.

In order for a flower to become a decorative item, you need to add rigidity to the product.

Add rigidity

Take the milk, apply it to the calyx of the flower and to the petals (apply with your hands, gently stroking and curling the ends). Once dried, the milk casein will give the product density, which will help maintain the shape of the petals.
