Chiffon dress

What is chiffon?

Chiffon is a fabric familiar to every woman since childhood.

The first matinees and graduation party are remembered by many for their flying, flowing dress. Chiffon has not gone out of fashion for many decades. This is an airy, transparent and weightless fabric; its production uses plain weave threads, that is, a criss-cross pattern.

This method of obtaining fabric is the simplest and oldest. Due to the use of crepe twisted threads, which means reinforced, the threads are twisted in different directions. These manufacturing features give the fabric a textured, grainy structure.

A little history

Today, the choice of chiffon is incredibly diverse in its composition, color and price. It’s hard to imagine, but less than a century ago, chiffon was made exclusively from natural silk threads. Wealthy people could afford silk items. Chiffon spoke of status and wealth, although the name has an unexpected translation. Translated from French - “rag”. The first who were able to enjoy silk fabric were the Chinese. They also came up with a way to make it.
It was possible to reduce the cost of fabric only in the 20th century, thanks to the invention of nylon and polyester. These raw materials for the production of chiffon made it possible to make the fabric accessible and everyday.

Types of chiffon

Silk

The fabric is smooth, soft, and has a slight natural shine. It is highly durable, perfectly breathable, does not cause irritation to the skin and almost does not wrinkle. Requires delicate hand washing or dry cleaning. If not properly cared for, it shrinks and may fade. Has the property of being electrified. Material with a silk composition is most often used in festive or wedding dresses.

With cotton base

The fabric does not have the shine of the silk version. It is tougher and does not lend itself well to draping. The structure is matte, perfectly breathable. Requires delicate care, hand wash and ironing at low temperature. In the hot summer, clothes made of cotton chiffon will be an excellent option.

Viscose

The appearance resembles silk. It has the properties of natural fibers and is pleasant to the skin. Requires delicate care, and especially in the wet version, the action of water reduces the strength of viscose. Squeezing by twisting is not recommended. Iron on silk setting.

Made from synthetic fibers

Some of the most affordable options. Untrained people sometimes cannot tell the difference between natural and synthetic chiffon. But of course there is a difference. The same silky shine is missing. The fabric does not breathe and in hot weather it does not feel very comfortable. However, it has the advantage of greater wear resistance and strength.

Chiffon

Whatever the composition of the material, it is produced in a variety of solid colors or patterns, with different densities and textures. Due to its thinness and ability to crumble during cutting and sewing, only experienced dressmakers can work with this material.

There are rules that craftsmen follow when cutting:

White chiffon

Light flowing dresses, skirts, blouses, tops - chiffon will make all these clothes irresistible. It is also used in the manufacture of accessories such as brooches, hairpins, and flowers.

This material is a frequent guest on fashion catwalks; it is used in their collections by such fashion houses as: Kenzo, Etro, Alexander, McQueen, Christian Dior, Chanel

The fabric is universal, clothes made from it will help hide flaws and highlight the winning sides. Women of different shapes, ages and incomes love and choose chiffon.
