Membrane fabric for children's clothing: what it is, its functions and purpose

Fabric membrane

Membrane fabrics are designed to protect the wearer from climatic factors such as wind and water, rain or snow. This depends on what benefits are sought and the end use of the fabric or other textile membrane.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of membranes: microporous and hydrophilic.

Microporous membranes are those that play with the pore size of the membrane to be able to allow sweat to pass in the form of water vapor from the inside to the outside, but not water from the outside to the inside and thus keep the user dry and comfortable.

Moreover, hydrophilic membranes do not differ in pore size, but are textiles with hydrophilic molecules, in which the polarity of water allows the passage of water molecules in gaseous form (sweat) from the inside to the outside. Differences in temperature and humidity cause sweat to be expelled to the outside, rather than the other way around.

What is softshell fabric?

Membrane material or softshell is a material made from woven fabric that is very flexible and very soft and comfortable.

This fabric consists of 3 layers of different materials:

  • The top layer keeps you dry by blocking rain or snow;
  • The middle layer is a membrane, it blocks the wind and allows the steam that your body produces while moving to pass through;
  • The inner layer is made of soft material that retains heat, allowing steam to escape from the inside to the outside.

Despite this, the membrane fabric is a lightweight material and provides freedom of movement for the child without additional weight. These qualities make this material popular when additional flexibility of movement is required, for example, in cycling, running, and simply during street games.

Benefits of using membrane fabric

Fabric membrane for children's clothing

Due to the soft and comfortable characteristics of membrane fabric, it can often be found in clothing for children and even toddlers, such as children's raincoats, onesies and other clothing that keep your children warm and dry.

To summarize, membrane fabric is waterproof, windproof, breathable and warm, making it an ideal choice if you are looking for a coat or jacket to:

  1. Protect your baby from unexpected rain and wind.
  2. Stay warm and maintain normal body temperature.
  3. Allow your baby's skin to breathe and feel comfortable.

In short, membrane fabric is an ideal material for days with changeable weather and light rain or drizzle. The amazing thing is that, without making any compromises, it retains all the essential practical properties of a waterproof fabric.The softness and elasticity of the material makes it, in our opinion, the best fabric for those who value comfortable clothing for their everyday lifestyle.

What to look for when choosing

Although there are cheap membrane fabrics and therefore jackets available, we advise caution when considering such fabrics. Because remember - not always, but in most cases the price is directly related to the quality of the product.

Nowadays, there are more and more fabric manufacturers offering different colors, prints and patterns for membrane material. By combining colorful patterns, design and the brilliant technical capabilities of this material, you can achieve amazing results.

How to choose the right material for a raincoat?

For summer use we recommend TPU, nylon or polyester fabrics. Otherwise, softshell raincoats are great to wear when outdoor temperatures range from 0 to 20 degrees ०C. Although the inner material of the membrane fabric is thin, it is quite warm.

Of course, it's worth remembering that even the most expensive and best materials aren't perfect, and there will always be a slight trade-off between waterproofing and breathability.

For us, the main thing is the ability of the fabric to breathe, retain heat and protect from unexpected rain and wind. As a result, we believe that when paired with the right design and print, a waterproof coat is not only a functional garment, but also a classic fashion statement for spring and fall weather. So if you want a fashionable and practical fabric for your baby, choose membrane fabric.
