Tweed

A beautiful and warm woolen material that looks cozy, homely, cute, but at the same time strict and stylish - tweed. It is ideal for protection from wind and cold, and therefore is often used when sewing coats, jackets, cardigans and many other types of clothing and home products. In the classic version, tweed is a natural, very heavy fabric with short pile.

Story

Scientists are still arguing about when tweed fabric appeared. However, most agree that this happened in the 18th century. At that time, in Scotland and Ireland, clothes made from such warm material were worn by farmers. In the 19th century, tweed clothing became popular among aristocrats: they used it for golf, horseback riding and hiking.

In the twentieth century, a variety of products were sewn from this woolen fabric. Already at that time it was used in the manufacture of warm bedspreads and blankets. In the first half of the century, tweed ceased to be considered a material for aristocrats: then they began to sew from it the so-called “eight-piece cap” - a cap worn by both rich European fashionistas and drivers, small traders, newspaper delivery men, ordinary workers and even bandits. However, the fashion for such a headdress quickly passed, but it did not disappear completely - even today, an eight-piece headdress is sometimes produced.

In the mid-twentieth century, tweed jackets became popular. Interestingly, both men and women wore them back then. In the modern world, when fashion trends change at the speed of light, this material is also not forgotten. Moreover, products made from it are worn by representatives of various generations, regardless of social or gender differences.

Peculiarities

Tweed is made from merino wool, a fine-wool sheep. The raw materials are first collected, then washed, and the water is changed more than once. After the wool is washed, it is dried, combed, sorted by color and sometimes dyed.

The finished material, although soft to the touch, is fleecy, and you definitely can’t call it smooth. This is due to the fact that wool threads are not twisted when making tweed. Previously, a product made from such fabric was often “prickly”; it was impossible to wear it without thick underwear (shirt, T-shirt). Today, completely natural tweed is almost never produced; woolen threads are necessarily mixed with synthetic fibers. Thanks to this, the finished product becomes even softer, it lasts much longer, does not pill or shrink after washing.

Tweed is a unique fabric whose properties captivate many connoisseurs of quality textiles. So, this material lasts a long time and practically does not wrinkle. It is very warm, but allows air to pass through well and does not cause allergic reactions. In addition, tweed products look stylish, even if it seems that they do not fall into modern fashion standards at all.

Kinds

The tweed fabric looks very interesting: if you look closely, you will notice that the threads are intertwined. In addition, there are other unusual types of weaving:

Tweed can also be for women or men. If the first one is softer, the weaving on it is often complex and fancy, then the second one is more strict and classic.

The material also varies in density: there is a very thin one, which is suitable for sewing scarves or not too voluminous jackets. There is also a thicker and heavier tweed, which is in demand when sewing coats and some other types of outerwear.
