Suede is a very capricious material. She requires special care. But even if you properly care for such shoes, over time they lose their original appearance. In addition, to be honest, it is not always possible to remove dirt on time or clean shoes according to all the rules. One of the common problems that arise with suede is fading and the appearance of peculiar “bald patches”. You don’t have to throw away your shoes—you can restore the color of suede at home.
What can cause the color of suede shoes to deteriorate?
Any suede shoes lose their appearance over time - that’s a fact. But its service life depends on operating conditions. So, the color can deteriorate from:
- moisture ingress;
- untimely shoe cleaning;
- contamination with various stains (for example, if some liquid is spilled);
- very long wear.
It turns out that if you don’t clean your shoes in a timely manner, you will speed up their failure date.
Important! Improper care of suede shoes can also cause color damage.
Improper care involves using cleaning products not intended for suede, including brushes.
3 ways to restore suede color
We offer methods that will help restore the color of any product made from this material.
Method No. 1 - soap solution. Any soap or powder will be useful here, but it is better to take regular laundry soap 65%.
- Apply soap to the brush and lather, slightly moistening.
- Wipe the surface with the resulting foam.
- Wipe with a dry cloth.
Important! Make sure that cleaning is carried out mainly with foam and a minimum amount of water gets on the surface.
If you use powder, it is better to dissolve it in water in advance, foam it, and wipe the shoes with the resulting foam. This method can be used to restore sneakers, shoes or boots, but be careful with black material.
Method 2 – salt or semolina. Any fine powder will do here. Usually semolina or fine salt is used. The cleaning method is very simple.
- Sprinkle a small amount of salt/semolina on your shoes or rag.
- Rub the surface with brisk movements, paying particular attention to stained areas.
- Wipe with a dry cloth, removing any remaining grain.
This method works great on old stains. The main condition is that the stains are dry, otherwise you will simply rub the stain over the surface.
Method 3 – milk and soda. This method will help both deal with stains and remove bald spots.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 3 tablespoons of milk.
- Take a soft cloth and wipe the product with the solution.
- Blot with a dry cloth.
- Dry away from heat sources.
Important! You need to take a rag that does not leave lint, otherwise it will be difficult to get rid of lint on the suede.
Using these methods, you will be able to restore the color of your shoes using improvised means. Cheap and cheerful!
How to restore suede in different colors
The methods described above cannot always be applied to suede. For example, you need to be extremely careful with black products, as stains and lint may remain on them.
There are special products for professional restoration and care of shoes. The most popular among them are sprays. A big plus of sprays is that they come in different colors. If you need to restore the color of a green, pink or black product, you won't find a better solution.
The method of using it is simple: just spray the aerosol at a distance of 20 cm from the shoe, then spread it over the surface with a special brush and leave to dry.
