There are so many things around us that are actually not so simple. It turns out that only those who have at least some connection to the world of sewing and needlework know what a pincushion is. Everyone else doesn’t always understand what exactly we’re talking about. If you are also one of the ignorant, our article will come to your aid.
The pincushion and everything about it
What is a pincushion? This is the name for a device for storing and transporting needles and pins. Its use greatly facilitates and speeds up the process of sewing, embroidery and other types of needlework that involve the use of needles or various pins.
The first needle cases were invented at a time when fabric and tools for sewing it were considered an outlandish and unaffordable luxury. Since needles were easily lost, and it was almost impossible to purchase new ones, the issue of their careful storage became one of the most pressing. For these purposes, the first needle beds were invented in Europe, which were made of fabric and paper.Then, more reliable and durable materials began to be used more and more often - metal, wood, ivory. However, such products also cost a lot. Only wealthy people could afford to buy them. The evolution of needle storage devices occurred as follows:
- 15th century - silver or ivory containers covered with wool or expensive fabrics;
- XVI - stands made of wood or silver;
- XVII–XVIII — pillows of various shapes made of satin, linen;
- IXX - pincushions become decorative elements, so they are made in the form of souvenirs (baskets, glasses, egg cups);
- XX - clips are in fashion, which can be conveniently attached to the desktop.
Today such a simple and irreplaceable thing as pincushion, even a first grader can do it. To create it, a variety of materials are used: from simple rag scraps and cotton wool to expensive porcelain, platinum, and precious stones. The most popular option is a rag pad stuffed with soft filling.
