Sewing craft involves the use of various tools, accessories and so-called finishing materials. Bias tape is considered one of the most sought after, popular and irreplaceable. But it often happens that novice seamstresses simply get lost at the mere mention of it, not understanding what it is and why.
What is bias tape?
This name is usually used to refer to applied tape, cut at an angle of 45 degrees and ironed with folded allowances. Use it as the main material for finishing sewing products.
Completely different materials can be used to make binding. This includes silk, chintz, knitwear, satin, cotton, and denser fabrics. Thanks to a special cut, the product gains the ability to stretch and becomes convenient to use.
Making the binding yourself is not particularly difficult. To do this, you need to take the fabric and cut it into a ribbon without seams. The edges of the part are folded, an iron is passed over them, and they are overcast. The result is a facing with allowances that simplify the further processing process.
Important! Conventional cutting methods will not be able to give the binding the elasticity and ability to bend around the sections of products.
Overlocking tape can be:
- Satin, intended for processing necklines and oblique cuts. It is used not only for sewing, but also in other types of needlework.
- Cotton, considered universal. Most often it is used in the process of sewing light clothing, underwear, bedding and products that have very complex cuts.
- Polyester, which gives an excellent fit.
In addition, you can purchase or make your own trim of different colors and shades, and then decorate it with rhinestones, beads, and sequins.
