Before starting to cross-stitch on canvas or other base, some needlewomen ask themselves: how many folds of thread should they take? To find out more about this, read our article below.
How to determine how many threads to cross stitch?
Experienced craftswomen first study the diagram and instructions included with the kit. Since sometimes some fragments are embroidered with a different number of threads. After all, several types of seams can be used in one painting. These are decorative, half-cross, cross, double cross, backstitch and others.
Simple sets usually contain canvas No. 14, on which a cross is embroidered in two folds. Those that are more complex are equipped with smaller canvas No. 18. This is Dimension's favorite base. There the manufacturer himself gives recommendations. But most often one is used.
Skeins or skeins of floss consist of six threads. How many of them are needed for work depends on the size of the canvas. Sometimes needlewomen have to embroider using the self-selection method, when the kit contains only an outline and a diagram.Then the selection is made as follows:
- Aida No. 20 or similar fabric with a frequent weave, 1 thread is used;
- Aida No. 18 – one or two;
- Aida No. 16 – two;
- Aida No. 14 – two or three, depending on the desire of the embroiderer;
- Aida No. 11 – three.
When embroidering on fabric with a half-cross, the quantity should accordingly be greater:
- Aida No. 18 – in three threads;
- Aida No. 16 – three or four;
- Aida No. 14 – four to five;
- Aida No. 11 – five or six.
How much thread to use for different purposes?
To create paintings, different types of canvas can be used: linen, cotton, synthetic. Linen canvas is more popular, as it has a dense weave. It is better to use cotton floss. But sometimes, to create original transition effects, several shades or types are taken in one stitch. This makes it possible to expand the color palette and improve the image, giving it naturalness. To perform this technique, 2 or 3 colors are threaded into the eye of the needle at the same time.
Very ready-made kits are convenient for creativity, sold in retail chains. They include canvas of the required size, threads of the required quantity and colors, and a needle. When there is no printed pattern on the canvas, a diagram is attached.
If you prefer to embroider with counted cross stitch, choosing the accessories yourself, then calculating its quantity is not at all difficult. You can simply take a canvas, one meter of thread in the number of folds that will be required. Count the number of crosses and the amount of thread used. Don't forget the ponytails. It is better to buy, of course, with a reserve. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to choose later, because it is not always possible to find the necessary textiles in stores.
