Clothing and accessories made from thick yarn are now in fashion, so manufacturers set high prices for such products. But this does not mean that you will have to empty your wallet in pursuit of the fashion for products knitted with large threads. You can knit such things yourself. You can create almost anything at home: from a hat, scarf and mittens to a long cardigan. Read on to find out how and what exactly you can knit from thick yarn.
Features of knitting from thick threads
Knitting with large threads is much faster than with regular or thin ones. But if you use patterns that do not take into account the features of such yarn, you will have to correct them yourself. The thickness of the threads affects not only the scale of the model as a whole, but also its weight. Under its own weight, the product will stretch and become longer. To avoid unwanted deformation, it is worth adjusting the length or scale of the product.
Choosing yarn and knitting needles
How to choose yarn:
- calculate in advance how many meters (skeins) of material are needed;
- study the composition of materials and choose the best one for yourself;
- come up with a color scheme, choose a color;
- consider different diameters and decide what suits you;
- Thickness is assessed on a six-point scale; choose threads numbered 5 (5.5–8 millimeters) or 6 (8 millimeters or more).
Important! Yarn varies in material and thickness. Threads can consist of synthetic or natural fibers. There are also those consisting of synthetics and wool in different concentrations. Synthetic ones are stronger and lighter than natural ones, but things made from yarn with a higher content of natural fibers will be warmer and more comfortable. Most often, threads with a synthetic content of up to 30% are used. Thick threads mean those whose length per 100 grams does not exceed 140 meters.
How to choose knitting needles:
- knitting needles with a diameter of 6–8 millimeters are suitable for knitting cardigans, sweaters and coats, and so on;
- knitting needles with a diameter of 8–15 millimeters are suitable for snoods, scarves, shawls, and so on;
- tools made of bamboo, metal and plastic are suitable for working with large threads;
- Both straight and circular knitting needles (convenient for working with mittens, sleeves, sweaters, sweaters, socks, etc.) are suitable.
