Kauni means beautiful in Estonian. Bright, multi-colored, soft to the touch yarn has become a favorite among needlewomen and fashionistas. In terms of its composition, it is 100% wool yarn. Its peculiarity lies in the interesting play of colors - one color smoothly transitions into another, while leaving behind an impressively sized island. Craftswomen note that knitting from the presented yarn is absolutely simple, because the thread is spun quite tightly.
How do you get it?
Kauni has been produced since 1969. This is done by the world-famous Estonian factory Aade Long, which is located near Tallinn in the town of Raasiku. Aade Long is a small company with only 12-15 workers. There are only two spinning machines here and they have been in operation since the 70s. Due to its small size, the company cannot satisfy all requests. First-class sheep wool is exported from Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Germany and up to now from Estonia itself. The fact is that the factory refused Estonian wool due to the fact that it did not meet all the set quality parameters.
It is important to note that such an interesting color transition is not achieved by coloring. Carded layers of several colors are selected and placed on top of each other with an offset. Thus, the yarn is obtained from raw materials of various colors, but is not dyed. The threads are rolled into a skein and delivered to their customers in this form.
It is important to know! It is not necessary to wash the yarn in skeins, but it is important to separate the threads when washing. They wash it carefully and dry it flat, so it becomes softer and fluffier.
Features, properties
Kauni yarn is the absolute composition of sheep wool, without any impurities. That is why she is prickly. Due to this property, it is not recommended to knit things that are worn on a naked body. It makes best warm winter clothes. They are light, almost weightless, but at the same time very warm. As mentioned earlier, the threads are sold twisted into a skein, which in fact turns out to be not very convenient for work.
In this regard, it is best to unwind the threads into a ball. The yarn is incomparable to wear; with proper care, it can last for many years without losing its original appearance. The colors, a priori, do not fade. By the way, the color palette is endlessly varied. Moreover, the colors can be combined with several shades, or monochrome. It is very important that plain yarn is an order of magnitude denser and is available in more than 20 variations.
It is important to know! To prevent the yarn from pricking the body, you need to drop some glycerin and conditioner into the water when rinsing. To prevent the fibers from sticking together, it is better to add a little citric acid or a weak vinegar solution to the water. Such items should be dried horizontally, while securing the edges.
Application area
This yarn is suitable for both machine knitting and hand knitting. But it is quite dense. For example, for a scarf you will need only 80 grams of thin Kauni. 150 grams will be spent on the shawl. A thin women's sweater of size forty-six will take 210 g, and a good-quality sweater will take 300 g, but for a medium-length dress of the same size - 400 g. For a men's sweater of size forty-eight, 400 grams will be needed. An openwork crocheted blanket will require 800 g. Every experienced needlewoman remembers that larger knitting needles and openwork knitting will reduce costs, while tight knitting and braids will increase them. In general, nothing is impossible for the described threads. Meanwhile, today it is very fashionable to knit accessories such as belts, handbags, and various accessories.
