There are 3 spinning methods. One of them is carded. Using this technology, threads are created that are used in the home and industrial sectors. Such products are more widespread than goods obtained by hardware or combing.
What is carded wool?
This is the most common type of yarn used in the weaving and knitting industries. In terms of structure and consumer characteristics, it occupies an intermediate position between hardware and comb, but goes through other stages of processing and formation, namely:
- loosening;
- mixing;
- chattering;
- carding;
- folding and stretching ribbons;
- pre-spinning and spinning.
For combed yarn, carding - carding in a cardan machine - is only an intermediate stage, after which the workpiece is sent for combing. For carded wool, this is the main technology.
Important! Skipping a step affects the smoothness of the finished thread.If the fiber has only been in the cardan apparatus, then the output is a fluffier and looser product.
Yarn properties
It is characterized by medium thickness. The indicator varies between 15–84 tex. This result is much better than the hardware one, but worse than the combed one. The uniformity of the thread is satisfactory, as is the strength.
Important! The tendency to frizz is not a difficult defect to eliminate. The formations are quite simply removed and, with the right approach, the procedure does not harm the fiber structure. Pellets are not typical for this type of product.
To reveal most of the positive qualities, the finished item will have to be washed.. The procedure is carried out in a traditional way for woolen products. Liquid and softening agents are used, and the water temperature is maintained at all stages to avoid hardening and shrinkage.
After drying, clothes made from carded wool become very pleasant to the body. It does not prick, is soft enough and warms well. The best reviews are received by wardrobe items knitted from carded yarn containing cashmere (10% or more of the total weight).
How does it compare favorably with other types of yarn?
The key difference from combed is the cost. Wool that has gone through carding and nothing more will cost less, even if raw materials of the same class are used for both technologies.
Compared to the hardware thread, the carded thread wins stronger and more clearly. Advantages of the latter type:
- although it is fluffy, the hardware is often even less smooth;
- the threads are located much more evenly;
- The thickness of the thread is an order of magnitude smaller.
Due to a more uniform distribution of threads and straightening of fibers, carded yarn is stronger, more comfortable and wear-resistant compared to hardware yarn.However, for the combed fish these figures are even higher.
