How much yarn do you need for simple mittens without a pattern?
For craftswomen who want to know exactly how much thread it will take to make a pair of mittens, you should 
make your own calculations.
To do this, you need to perform the following steps.
- Construct a drawing (as in Table 2).
- Knit a swatch of ribbing and plain stitch (garter stitch, stockinette stitch or purl stitch).
- Calculate the area of the sample.
- Calculate the area of the product.
- Unravel the sample and measure the length of the thread;
- Next, multiply the area of the entire product by the length of the thread and divide the resulting value by the area of the sample. This way you will calculate the required footage of the material.
On mittens with a pattern
For patterned version you can use the above method. You should also know 
two rules.
- Fewer threads are needed for openwork fabric.
- Aran weaves “eat up” footage. And the more there are in the pattern, the more material will be needed.
Advice. Another option to calculate the required flow rate: do not dissolve the sample, but find out its weight.
Then the calculation is carried out according to the following formula: multiply the area of the entire product by the weight and divide by the area of the sample. In this option you will get the required mass of material.
For thick mittens
For volumetric variations of mittens, you can use the same calculation options as for other examples. But, according to the observations of many experienced craftswomen, this variation usually fits into 100 grams of yarn. After all, the yarn itself is quite voluminous, and large knitting needles are used to create items from it. This means that with fewer rows and loops, a larger fabric is obtained.
