A Brief History of Christmas Tree Decorations

The first Christmas tree decorations appeared in Rus' quite a long time ago. Decorations on Christmas trees were meant to demonstrate abundance and prosperity. And most often these Christmas tree decorations were apples, gingerbread or cookies suspended on ribbons. And of course, soft toys were hung on the Christmas tree. In the 16th century, the first tinsel for the Christmas tree began to appear. For greater effect, lit candles were placed near the tree so that the tinsel would sparkle in the sparkle of the fire. It is believed that the tradition of decorating Christmas trees for the New Year was introduced by Peter I, but, in fact, it existed much earlier.

The first productions that began to make Christmas tree toys on an industrial scale (previously, these specialized toys were made to order exclusively for noble people or brought from abroad) produced toys for all segments of society. So the first toys for the masses resembled modern garlands made of foil and tinsel. At the same time, the first glass decorations appeared - New Year's balls with a mirror surface, painted with ornaments with snowflakes and icicles. During the reign of Nicholas I, the tradition of decorating Christmas trees was finally strengthened among the nobility. It is believed that the emperor's wife greatly influenced this tradition. Experts in the history of toys claim that in the middle of the 19th century, buying a glass toy for the average resident of Russia was akin to buying a car for our contemporary; glass toys were so expensive that not everyone could afford them. As an alternative, glass beads... and knitted balls made of shiny materials began to be used. It is noteworthy that in the 19th century the tree was dismantled quite quickly: according to tradition, children who came to the holiday took apart all the gifts and sweets hanging on the tree, and sometimes they were allowed to take some of the decorations they liked. Already in the twentieth century, the New Year's toy became commonplace, attracted little attention, and Christmas trees began to be left not only for Christmas Eve, and some today admire the tree with New Year's decorations right up to March.
