The homeland of the pillow familiar to every modern person is Greece. It was here that people most strived for comfort and coziness. They were much less concerned about hairstyles than about the comfort of relaxation. Therefore, the inhabitants of Greece were the first in the world to sew pillowcases of various shapes, and stuff them with feathers, down, wool and herbs. The first pillowcases were made of leather and fabric. At the same time, Ancient China, on the contrary, welcomed sleep on hard stands made of stone, iron, and porcelain. It is characteristic that such stands had a rectangular shape.

Arab countries were distinguished by the fact that they considered a pillow a sign of wealth and status. The more soft sleeping accessories there were in the house, the more influential the owner was considered. It was customary to embroider items with gold and decorate them with fringe.

The first information about the appearance of bed linen dates back to the Renaissance. Only wealthy people, the elite of society, could afford a set of bedding. Expensive fabric was used for sewing.The linen was hand-sewn from damask and silk. Over time, less expensive material replaced it. Some of the linen began to be sewn from chintz and calico. Today, making bed linen has been simplified to the maximum. For example, a pillowcase made from a man's shirt is considered a very stylish bedding item.

We begin sewing a pillowcase by carefully ironing a man's shirt. We pay special attention to the back, turn the product over, iron the front part. Each button on the shirt must be fastened, and the clothing itself must be laid out on a flat surface. Before starting work, straighten the shirt. Next steps:

  • We create a pattern based on the pillowcase used for a specific pillow;
  • You can measure the pillowcase and make a layout according to the drawing or simply attach it to the back of the shirt;
  • Apply a pillowcase and secure it with a pin to the shirt. On dark material it is easier to use soap or chalk to trace the outline of the sample. It is more difficult to work with light fabric - you will have to cut the material directly according to the sample. Therefore, it is extremely important to firmly fasten the fragments;
  • When cutting out a finished piece of bedding, you must leave a seam allowance of one or two centimeters. After completing the work, trim the remaining fabric with scissors;
  • It is necessary to calculate the size of the pillowcase so that it is as tight as possible. Then the pillow will be softer and more beautiful;
  • After cutting out two fragments on the front and back sides of the shirt, you need to remove the pins. The pattern will no longer be needed.

For a pillowcase, a shirt made of natural, body-friendly fabric is best suited.

Do-it-yourself pillow from a shirt - sewing the fragments together

In order to assemble the product, we use the following algorithm:

  1. We connect two fragments of the shirt together with the right sides facing inward. Then the seam will not be visible on the face of the product.
  2. Before you start sewing, you need to unfasten the button so that after sewing is completed, the product turns out to the outside.
  3. We will fasten the two parts along all edges with pins, this will make it easier to sew the product together.
  4. You can use machine stitching or work by hand. Any seam option can be used. A double seam will be as strong as possible.
  5. Sew all edges. Now, through the hole left, turn the product right side out.
  6. Unfasten all the buttons to insert the pillow into a new pillowcase.
  7. To create an original design, you can cut one piece from different shirts.
  8. An original applique sewn with large stitches will help decorate the bedding. The technique of embroidery on bed linen will also decorate the product.
