DIY applique on knitwear
The essence of reverse appliqué is to combine two materials of different textures or colors. New fabric can be placed on top of the product or underneath, depending on the type of decoration. As a result, the fabric picture is located under the main canvas. This is the main difference between reverse appliqué and the direct type of clothing decoration. To make an original decor, you will need:
- Two types of material of different colors.
- A simple pencil for marking.
- Scissors.
- Sewing machine. Not necessary, you can do it manually, but it will take more time.
- Threads to match.
- Outline for applique. It can be any pattern cut out of thick paper, an oval, a circle or letters.
Initially, we take the upper knitted material and draw on it the shape of the future applique. For dark fabrics, you can take a piece of chalk or soap; for light fabrics, use a soft, simple pencil. Let's draw a star. Place the patterned fabric on top of the second type of fabric. To fix the layers, we use bobby pins. By hand or on a machine, we make a seam along the drawn edges of the design.
A curly seam will look original, but you can also use a regular stitch. Cut out the center of the star on the top fabric. We continue to carefully cut the material little by little until we reach the seam. It is important not to catch the bottom sheet so as not to damage the design.

- T-shirt;

- bright pink fabric.
The applique can be of any shape - it doesn't matter. The operating principle always remains the same:
- We find an image of a heart on the Internet. Open it in a graphics editor to adjust the size.
- We print the design, cut out the heart and transfer it to pink fabric for applique.
- Having outlined the outline of the heart, carefully cut it out.
- Turn the T-shirt inside out and pin the design in the desired location.
- Using a machine stitch, we sew along the outline of the heart. We use small stitches. When working manually, you need to make sure that the needle captures both canvases.
- After finishing work, remove the pins and turn the T-shirt inside out again.
- We take scissors. They should have sharp, sharpened ends. Carefully cut out the heart along the contour of the stitch, without catching the seam.
- When the image on the front side is ready, go to the back side and remove all remnants of the material.
- Iron the applique with a hot iron. If the fabric is delicate, we perform steam treatment.
