In this material we will tell you how to make a charming scops owl toy with your own hands. At the end of the article you will find a master class for beginners on sewing toys, as well as a visual pattern and sewing diagram.
What is a Scops Owl toy?
Scops Owl is a soft anthropomorphic toy with closed eyes. Such a plush dormouse will “set a good example” for the child and fall asleep with him in the crib. Usually scops owls are made from soft hypoallergenic fabrics. With a Scops Owl toy, the child is more willing to prepare for Morpheus' hugs and falls asleep faster. This scops owl is intended for newborns, but much older children also willingly take them to bed. The Scops Owl toy can become a child’s favorite during the first months of life, or even the first few years.
There are several mandatory points when choosing fabric for sewing a scops owl and its size:
- It is advisable to choose fabrics in pastel colors. This will make it easier to track the condition of the toy and wash your dirty favorite in time.
- The fabric should be quite dense and practical on the one hand, and natural on the other, so as not to injure the child’s skin and not provoke allergies.
- Choose small sizes so that the scops owl is compact and convenient to take with you on a trip.
Separately, among all types of scops owls, the subspecies “comforter” is distinguished. This toy was invented by Suzanne Canizzo, who sewed the first sample for her child. It is believed that the special features of the scops owl-comfoter are its small size (it is convenient to place it on the child during feeding instead of the breast, and then go away, leaving the child to sleep with the toy), and there are also special seals on the ears of the toys so that the child can chew the toy, which reminds of the presence of mother and creates a feeling of security. Most often, the toy is made in the shape of a bunny.
What you will need to sew a comforter scops owl:
- A piece of plain light-colored fabric. We recommend taking fleece.
- A piece of multi-colored fabric in pastel shades with an unusual pattern. For this you can use cotton or calico. To save money, you can use leftover fabric.
- Safe filler for toys.
- Sewing supplies (thread, scissors, needle).
- Our universal pattern.
Step-by-step master class on sewing a Scops Owl toy:
Cut out all four pattern elements: body, ears, head and the second part of the head. Many people recommend making a nose and other parts of the muzzle out of large buttons, but we strongly recommend that you abandon any accessories and spend time embroidering some elements (eyes, nose, mouth, paws and other elements that you want to detail).
- Fasten two types of fabric (plain and colored) with pins and cut out the required number of parts. You should get a pair of ears each made of cotton and fleece, three parts for the head cut, and two for the body (made of cotton and fleece).
- Fold the ear pieces in pairs with the right layers facing inward (one side of the ear should be fleece and the other cotton) and sew them together.
- You need to sew the side parts of the head to the ready-made ears.
- Next, the resulting ears with already sewn parts of the head need to be attached to the main part of the head of the scops owl toy.
- Turn the entire head right side out, stitch individual parts and embroider the details of the muzzle.
- Using the same principle, sew the body.
- Connect the parts of the toy, leaving a small unstitched area.
- Fill the toy with safe stuffing.
- Finish the details, seal the tips of the ears and stylized arms and legs so that the child can chew the ends.
