DIY leatherette shopping bag: simple and environmentally friendly

A now fashionable shopping bag in a store sometimes costs incredible amounts of money. But instead of spending money on an expensive accessory, you can make it yourself. All you need is basic sewing tools and a small piece of dyed leatherette. And today I’ll tell you exactly how to do this!

Why this particular material?

I recommend using only high-quality leatherette for your bag for a reason. It is much more practical than soft fabric and cheaper than real leather. This material has many advantages, such as:

  • Strength and elasticity.
  • Nice texture.
  • Ease of use (easy to cut, glue and sew).
  • Moderate cost.
  • Huge selection of colors.
  • Easy to maintain and clean.
  • Ethical use (unlike natural leather, the production of leatherette does not harm animals in any way).

A good substitute is practically not inferior to natural material in its properties. It only has three drawbacks.Firstly, it is afraid of water, and with constant exposure to it it can become deformed. Secondly, it is not very resistant to temperature changes. Thirdly, the bag should be kept away from pets: they can easily scratch even the most durable and high-quality leatherette.

DIY process

Making a fashionable tote bag is actually quite simple. All you need is a basic set of tools and basic sewing skills. The materials you will need are: a piece of leatherette, strong threads in color, cotton twill tape 1 centimeter wide, leather glue and accessories, if needed. There will be a little more tools. Among them:

  • Thick needle.
  • Ruler.
  • Cutting mat.
  • Roller knife.
  • Plastic hammer.
  • Pen.
  • Scissors.
  • Awl.
  • Clamps.
  • Pins.
  • Wooden block.

Manufacturing step by step

First you need to draw a pattern on a piece of paper. First mark the bottom, draw the side on top. Make two handles of the required width on the left and right. Add ten centimeters to the desired length - five on each side. Then cut out, that is, cut out, all the marked parts on a piece of artificial leather.

It is after this that you need to use an awl to mark holes for sewing the handles on themselves and on the side.

The two side pieces should be folded together, facing inward. Place a ribbon on each edge and sew the bag. Afterwards, transfer it to a wooden block. Treat the allowances with glue and tap them with a hammer to get a better grip.

The next step is to sew the bottom to the bag, having previously lined it with tape. You need to glue the seam allowances in a similar way. Then little remains. First, sew the handles together, leaving free ends. Secondly, pin them to the bag and stitch them. Ready!

What can you wear it with?

A fashionable shopper is a versatile accessory that can be easily incorporated into your everyday look. For example, it will fit perfectly into casual wear. The bag will look interesting with regular jeans and sneakers, complemented by a loose sweater. This way you can go to school without fear of breaking the rules of business style.

Another option is to decorate the bag with a beautiful floral print. In this case, it will fit perfectly into any summer look. This shopper can be combined with a light dress, ballet flats and cardigan. An excellent look for a date or an evening walk along the embankment.

The accessory looks great with a sporty style of clothing, but this does not mean that the bag is contraindicated for office ladies. The classic black rectangular version is the best addition to a suit, white blouse and pumps. By the way, the shopper looks great with both a classic long coat and everyone’s favorite down jackets.
