Due to the wide variety of yarns, many needlewomen are lost when choosing a material.So, what yarn can you use for a cardigan? They use: wool (cashmere, mohair, angora, merino, alpaca), acrylic, silk, viscose, bamboo thread, cotton and linen. It all depends on the model, design, and for what season (winter, autumn, spring or summer) the item is needed.
Interesting: A cardigan is one of the universal things that allows for numerous experiments. And not only in terms of the chosen model!

Product pattern:
If you are a beginner needlewoman, then you can easily choose an easy pattern and make yourself a beautiful and comfortable thing. Especially if you use melange threads, you can quickly get a “designer” cardigan. And there are few people who will guess that you are gaining experience on the “handmade path”.
If you are already an experienced craftswoman, you can try combinations of different color patterns or a variety of braids in one model. “Celtic braids” will look especially good. They are at the same time simple, but also require a certain perseverance.
Step by step guide
Let's take a closer look at how to knit a “Bat” cardigan coat based on sizes 46-48.
Attention: Before working on the product, be sure to knit a sample in order to accurately calculate the knitting density and the amount of yarn!
Required:
- Yarn (acrylic) – 660 grams;
- Circular knitting needles No. 3;
- Wooden fittings (buttons);
- Basic pattern: elastic band alternating 1 front and 1 purl loops;
- Options: you can use garter stitch, various braids.
Progress:
- To get started, cast on 74 loops for the right shelf, 138 loops for the back, 74 for the left shelf.
- We divide it into three parts using tags or knitting devices.
- We knit 60 rows with the main pattern.
- Batwing sleeve: cast on 109 stitches from the front side, mark five parts for further transition. Next we knit the raglan up to half of the right shelf. Next we make a decrease: 2 loops together, 5 elastic loops, 2 loops together, 5 elastic and so on until the end of the row.
- We repeat the following decreases: 7 rows – 34 times.
- Next: 2 loops together behind the back loop of the elastic band, 5 loops with the elastic band and so on until the end of the row.
- Repeat this for 7–8 rows.
- We make holes for accessories (buttons). To do this, knit the 6th and 7th loops together on the shelf in the 63rd row and then another 48 rows.
- For the neck we close on each side, in the second row there are 17 loops 2 times.
- At a height of 79 - 80 cm, close the loops.
- Collar: from the front side we rise along the neckline by 116 loops.
Knit with an elastic band or garter stitch. If you plan to attach accessories (buttons) to the collar, then you should knit a hole for it. It is done 3 - 4 centimeters from the beginning of knitting the collar. The collar is knitted with a height of 13–14 centimeters. Next, all loops are closed.
The edges of the product are finished with a chain stitch. Decorative embroidery can be used as decoration. The fittings are sewn on. The product is ready.
