A feminine and practical cape is a cape, something between a poncho and a coat. A cape differs from a poncho in the presence of a clearly defined shoulder area; after all, a poncho is shapeless and covers the body like a blanket. A cape differs from a coat by the absence of sleeves or its unusual shape and, of course, by the material.
Interesting fact: The famous detective Sherlock Holmes introduces us to the attractiveness of the cape. If you think about it, his main external distinguishing features were his cap and, of course, his cape. But, if the cap was glorified directly by Mr. Holmes, then the cape at that time did not need advertising anyway.
We will look at how to knit a long cape with buttons. Let's make a neat collar and knit accent braids near the buttons. Knitted braids along the buttons will create a vertical look in the look, which slims and lengthens the height of the model.
Necessary materials
The cape can be knitted to any length; the following are calculations for a length of 128 cm:
- 850-900 g of yarn;
- knitting needles No. 5;
- buttons with a diameter of 50 mm, 11 pcs.
Scheme
The cape consists of functional elements:
- Plank: we knit one by one, first 3 rows with purl loops, then 3 rows with knit stitches.
- Buttonholes: remove the edge loop. We knit 5 loops, and then we knit 4 closed loops and cast on new loops.
- Braid: to knit a braid you need to knit 19 loops according to the patterns. Repeat upwards from rows 1 to 12.
- Rib: a neat rib is made by knitting 3 knit stitches and then 3 purl stitches.
Step by step description
We start knitting with an elastic hem. We cast on the knitting needles 264 loops. You need to knit 24 rows of elastic in the forward direction, and then the same number in the opposite direction (it will be approximately 9 cm).
We knit a hole for the button. We count 30 rows from the elastic hem, the rows of the elastic itself do not count. We knit our first hole for the button.
Important: For women's clothing, it is customary to make a button hole on the right side. A hole for a button must be made in every 24th row. There should be a total of 11 holes.
We knit holes for the arms. They should be on both sides of the elastic band. The distance from the end of the hem elastic is 142 rows, which is approximately 54 cm. The width of the slots themselves is 58 loops. We leave them temporarily and knit 148 loops. The first and last 5 loops can be knitted with a plank pattern. We knit another 45 rows (about 17 cm) and temporarily leave our loops.
We tie the loops left earlier to the desired sleeve length.
We knit the allowances of the holes for the arms. We collect 5 loops from the loops of the finishing strips in the purl row. Then we continue to knit all the remaining loops.At the same time, in the first row, where we knitted the bar pattern, we knit the loops of the side and middle parts together with the front loops.
To neatly round our shoulders, you need to knit 2 rows, and then make marks: 47 loops, make mark No. 1, 46 loop, make mark No. 2, 78 loop, make mark No. 3, 46 loop, make mark No. 4, 47 loop.
After mark No. 1 and mark No. 3 we knit 2 loops together.
Before mark No. 2 and mark No. 4 we knit 2 loops together with a tilt to the left.
Important: We remove 1 loop in the same way as when knitting the front, then knit the second loop, and pull the removed (first) loop through the knitted (second) loop.
Repeat such decreases 4 times in every 6th row, repeat 5 times in every 5th row and repeat 7 times in every 2nd row.
We knit the shoulders. To smoothly round the shoulders, we will perform decreases in every 2nd row:
- Before marks No. 1 and No. 3, we knit 2 loops together, tilting to the left (see point above).
- After marks No. 2 and No. 4, we knit 2 loops together with the facial loops.
- There will be 176 loops in total.
We knit the collar. We will continue working on the collar with the main pattern, and knit the remaining loops with an elastic band. Attention: in order for the loops of the pattern to lie symmetrically on the pattern, you need to knit 2 loops together once.
After 16 rows, every 3 knit stitches in the elastic pattern are reduced to 2 loops: we knit 2 loops together with a knit stitch. In the next front row, every 3 purl loops are reduced to 2 loops. We knit alternately - 2 knit stitches, then 2 purl loops. There are 36 rows in total, this is approximately 14 cm. Then close the loops. All that remains is to attach the buttons and the unique homemade cape is ready.
