Calculation of canvas by the number of crosses

Canvas is one of the most convenient and popular types of fabrics for embroidery. Both beginners and experienced needlewomen work with her. Canvas is an excellent basis for creating paintings from beads, floss, ribbons, and wool. It is practical, easy to wash and has good wear resistance. But there is one catch, which is figuring out the fabric sizes needed to work with certain patterns. To do this, you need to know how the outline is calculated by the number of crosses.

How to calculate the canvas for embroidery correctly?

After all, everyone knows that canvas can be presented in several sizes. Therefore, the same drawing will look different on a large and small canvas. In more detail, the number is the number of crosses that one inch of material (2.54 cm) can accommodate. Today, Aida is considered the most popular embroidery fabric sold in all retail outlets. It is produced under numbers 11, 14, 16, 18, 22.

To decide on the choice of a suitable Aida, you will have to count the number of crosses per 10 cm. So, No. 11 contains 43 crosses per 10 cm. The fourteenth - 55 crosses, the sixteenth - 63, the eighteenth - 71, the twenty-second - 87 crosses.

To understand how much material will be needed to create a certain motif, you will first have to find out how many crosses it includes in width and height. For example, the finished scheme involves laying 500 crosses in width and 600 in height. Knowing this, you can begin to calculate the amount of fabric.

how to calculate the outline using crosses

Method No. 1

For example, let’s take Aida No. 14, which contains 55 cells in 10 cm. The calculation scheme looks like this:

  • Width - 500:55*10+10=100.9 cm.
  • Height - 600:55*10+10= 119.9 cm.

It is worth saying that the number 10 is the necessary allowance for the edges. If you don’t do it, it will be impossible to frame the finished picture into a baguette.

Method No. 2

The formula is slightly different, but the final result remains the same:

  • Width - 500:14*2.54+10=100.9 cm.
  • Height - 600:14*2.54+10= 119.9.

In this version, 14 is the canvas number, the number 2.54 is equal to cm in inches.

To speed up the embroidery process, the outline can be drawn. It is most convenient to focus on squares, which include 10 cells in width and height. To avoid leaving marks on the fabric, it is better to use special water-soluble markers for drawing.

There is another method for calculating the outline, which you can use if you have a computer or phone with Internet access at hand - an online calculator. It is enough to find it using a search engine and enter the available data into the algorithm: the size of the pattern in stitches in width and height, the number of allowances in centimeters, the number of the canvas. After clicking the “calculate” button, a ready-made answer will appear on the screen.
