The envelope clutch is a modern interpretation of a women's bag for any occasion. It looks feminine and elegant with an evening outfit, fits a business style, and is very convenient for walking and shopping. Accessories may vary in size. Small products are designed to contain the most necessary things: keys, phone, little by little, etc. A large envelope will fit some documents, a notepad, and office supplies.

The clutch is often used as a tablet case. If the bag has a special strap, you can attach it to your bike while riding. The stores offer a wide range of products for every taste. But if you want to have an exclusive item, it is better to sew it yourself. First you need to choose the size and style of the future accessory. The standard envelope size is 15 by 20 centimeters.

The fabric from which it is made is of great importance. Thick fabric is suitable for a winter product. Leather, drape or wool handbags look good. For summer it is better to choose a lighter material. Satin, velvet, silk fabric is suitable. For a standard clutch you will need no more than half a meter of canvas. The lining is purchased separately. If you plan to make a leather product, you should choose soft leather.

Sew an envelope clutch from fabric - master class

Before starting work on the bag, a pattern is made. It is as simple as possible - it consists of one rectangle equal to the size of the future product. We draw the figure on thick cardboard, cut it out and transfer it to the fabric. First, turn the material inside out. Draw the outline with chalk or pencil. We repeat the work two more times. You should end up with three fabric rectangles. We do the same with the lining material.

On the top figure we remove the corners from above to make a flap for the fastener. The pattern will take the shape of an unfolded envelope. The same figure should be on the lining. Cut out both envelopes. We put the lining material wrong side down, fold it and stitch it, we get a pocket.

We perform the same actions with the main material, but it needs to be turned inside out. All that remains is to connect the lining and the front side and stitch along the seams. The fabric clutch is ready. All that remains is to turn it inside out and sew on the fastener. You can use a button, button or magnet.

  • Lay out the material with the wrong side up. Using a ruler and pencil, draw a rectangular shape on the reverse side that corresponds to the dimensions of the future product. Draw the closing part in the shape of a triangle together with the rectangle.
  • Re-draw the rectangle, without the closing part. Place the two elements with the wrong sides facing each other. Using an awl, make several holes three millimeters from the edges.
  • Insert a thick nylon thread into the needle. Sew the elements together using a simple seam, by hand.
  • After completing the seam, fasten the thread from the wrong side so that the seam does not unravel.
  • Sew the product in the opposite direction again. Double stitch securely connect the parts of the bag.
  • The half ring will be on the strap. For it you need to cut a small strip and punch holes in the leather.
  • Wrap the half ring with a strap and stitch it with nylon through the punched holes.
  • You can sew a strap with a holder on either side.
  • Now you need to cut a longer belt, which will be the handle of the clutch. Thread the strip into a carabiner and sew three layers. All seams must be securely fastened.
  • Lastly, the fastening is done. A circle of fabric or a patch is sewn onto the triangular part to secure the retainer. You can choose any type of fastener. Velcro, magnet, button will do.
