The butterfly sleeve is a popular sleeve model, which is often used by modern designers when creating cocktail dresses, sophisticated evening dresses, blouses or summer sweaters. This style is one-piece, sleeve length is approximately elbow length. It falls beautifully in waves from the shoulders, giving the models lightness and airiness. Sewing this style is not difficult, modeling also does not take much time. The main task is to choose the right fabric so that it fits beautifully. Here you can choose between dense materials and light, thin fabrics.
The basis for choosing a fabric is possibly a beautiful drapery. If you want to decorate your product with sleeves with delicate, flowing folds, it is better to take a closer look at chiffon or silk. A more voluminous option will be obtained when choosing knitwear. Thin woolen sleeves or items made from suiting or mixed fabrics look original. The sleeve shape will look more defined, but this option is not suitable for everyone. It looks good on thin ladies, but the breasts should be small. Designers recommend making such a sleeve from a plain material; it looks more impressive.
How to make a stylish butterfly sleeve - pattern
To start working on the sleeve, we take a basic layout of the bodice. You can find it on any sewing website or make it yourself. On the finished sample, we transfer the dart on the chest to the seam on the side. Next, the pattern is constructed as follows:
- On the chest dart, select the lowest point and draw a straight line to the side seam. The point where the line intersects with the seam will be approximately six centimeters below the armhole. We make a cut clearly along the drawn line. We remove the top dart on the pattern by gluing its edges with tape. You can also use glue.
- Now you need to cut the model vertically along the modeling line and move it apart on different sides to form an updated dart.
- We place the pattern of half the front part and half the back part of the bodice on paper. If you have experience working with such patterns, you can immediately transfer the layout to the material. We place the patterns at right angles to each other. The bottom left corner of one pattern should almost touch the bottom right corner of the second pattern.
- We carefully move the back to the middle by three centimeters. A similar distance should be left between the bottom point of the side seam of the back and front. Round the waist and choose the type of sleeve.
- To make a regular butterfly sleeve, connect the extreme point on the back shoulder and on the front.
- For a shortened shoulder, you will need to divide the shoulder length into two halves and connect these marks.
Based on the chosen design, you need to make patterns of one or two parts and bend the back or front along the center line. Then you can move on to sewing.
Butterfly sleeve - sewing technique
There is very little left. Sew the product along the shoulders and process the sleeve. The processing method should be chosen depending on the characteristics of the fabric. The best option is to use a blind seam along a double folded section of the material. As a result, we get wide, short sleeves that fall beautifully from the shoulders. Wavy edges add romance and originality to the product.
The butterfly sleeve previously adorned national Filipino costumes. It was from them that European fashion designers borrowed a fashionable idea. Multi-layer butterfly sleeves look beautiful. They are more suitable for elegant dresses and festive blouses.
