Fabric canvas

Embroidery is one of the favorite pastimes of a large number of women. I even met men who cross-stitched entire pictures. In addition to threads, beads of different sizes and ribbons are also used for embroidery. However, the main element always remains the base - the fabric. The simplest and most accessible material that allows you to create various products and use many techniques is canvas.

What is embroidery canvas and its varieties?

This is the name for a special type of fabric made in the form of a fine mesh, the size of which can vary depending on the number. The smaller it is, the larger the mesh, and vice versa. This canvas is used as a stencil or as a basis for embroidery with beads, threads, and ribbons. Canvas is made from cotton or linen, but if you try, you can find non-woven, paper and even plastic material. And for special needs, a fabric was invented that can dissolve in water.

As for color, white canvas is the most popular. However, today it is not a problem to purchase a color one, or even one that already has a drawing or approximate diagram on it. Let's look at each of the known varieties in more detail.

Fabric

Today in stores you can easily purchase various types of fabric canvas. Particularly popular are:

  1. Aida. The divisions on this material resemble squares. It is most often used for training, but even experienced craftswomen do not pass by this easy-to-use fabric. As for the numbers, they change between seven and twentieth.
  2. Evenweave. This variety is considered the most difficult to work with, so only experienced embroiderers choose it. This is because you need to carry out and calculate the markings on it yourself. It doesn’t have a clear division, but it also doesn’t have holes, which on the one hand can be taken as a virtue. Evenweave is made from cotton, linen, and synthetics.
  3. Hardanger. This is the name given to the smallest canvas, which is suitable for creating paintings using the counted satin stitch and hardanger techniques.
  4. Davosa. Intended for embroidery of textile interior products. It is of high quality, as the material for production is 100% cotton.
  5. Linda. A material with a special weave that can replace linen and makes it possible to cross stitch in different directions.
  6. Linen with uneven weave. It is considered the most durable, suitable not only for cross stitching, but also for hemstitching.
  7. Stramin. Rough and hard canvas, which is used to create decorative pillowcases, rugs, paths, string bags.

Plastic

It is gaining increasing popularity due to the ability to change shape and take on the appearance of various products. This canvas does not crumble when cut, and is produced in a standard A4 sheet. You can embroider on it using satin stitch, half-cross stitch, or carpet technique.

Do you need to create a cross stitch design on felt or knitwear? An overhead canvas can help you realize your plans. You just need to baste it to the desired area and embroider the prepared design. You can get rid of the backing by pulling out the threads.

Water soluble

You can really buy it in any handicraft store. After embroidering on such a canvas, you only need to soak the product or a fragment of the treated fabric in moderately hot water. After half an hour, the substrate will completely disappear.

Paper canvas

Perforated paper for cross stitch has become very popular lately. However, you need to work with it extremely carefully. It is important not to forget to mix silk in the floss and embroider in 2 threads.

Designer (with printed pattern)

This variety is indispensable for beginners, as it saves them from the process of calculation, use of diagrams, and selection of colors. The sketch applied to the fabric completely disappears under the crosses or beads during the work process.

Beginners who have only recently discovered the world of hoops and floss may not fully understand the criteria for choosing a base fabric. The first thing you can do is start working with a design canvas or purchase a ready-made set, complete with the necessary consumables.
